Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS -- The Jackson Generals swept the Mississippi Braves in Thursday evening's doubleheaders at Trustmark Park. The Generals took game one 4-1 and shutout the M-Braves 6-0 in game two of the twin bill. The series continues Friday at 7:00 PM as the Braves look to even the series at two games apiece.
Mississippi (24-22, 62-54) scored one run on six hits in game one while the Generals (21-22, 50-59) plated four runs on 14 hits. In game two, the M-Braves managed just five hits. Jackson scored six runs on 10 hits while committing one error. Christian Bethancourt doubled in the first inning of game one to extend his on-base streak to 34 games. He's chasing Willie Cabrera's record of 38 games, set in 2009.
In game one, Jackson took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Leon Landry and Chris Taylor reached on back-to-back singles. Gabriel Noriega followed with a two-run double down the right field line to put the Generals out front early.
Edward Salcedo blasted a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second and cut the Generals lead to 2-1. It was Salcedo's team-leading 11th home run of the season.
The Generals added two more runs in the top of the seventh. Ramon Morla and John Hicks singled to put runners at the corners with two outs. Dan Paolini then delivered a two-run double to left-center field, extending Jackson's lead to 4-1.
James Gillheeney (5-6) held the M-Braves to one earned run on six hits and a walk. He struck out two batters to pick up the win. Gus Schlosser (6-4) gave up two earned runs on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out six batters in five and two-thirds innings pitched. Carson Smith (S, 13) worked the final two frames to notch the save.
In game two, Jackson took a 1-0 lead in the first when Leon Landry singled and scored on a Julio Morban doubled to center field.
The Generals made it a 3-0 contest in the third. Taylor doubled and scored on Landry's double to right field. Landry moved to third on a fly out and came around to score on Morla's double to left field.
Jack Marder led off the top of the fifth with a walk. Taylor singled and Landry laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Morban was intentionally walked to load the bases before Morla delivered a bases-clearing triple to make it a 6-0 game.
Kyle Hunter (2-0) held the M-Braves to just four hits while walking one and striking out two in five innings. Gary Moran (1-2) worked four and one-third innings for the Braves. He gave up six earned runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning one.
M-Braves right-hander Mitch Atkins (3-1, 2.66) toes the rubber for the M-Braves Friday night. He'll counter Generals lefty Anthony Fernandez (8-5, 4.01). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
