Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
BILOXI, Miss. - The Jacksonville Suns (14-20) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (21-12) by an 8-6 score at MGM Park in the fourth game of the five game series on Thursday night.
Jacksonville carried a 6-4 lead to the bottom of the eighth, only to see the Shuckers score four runs in the frame to pick up the two-run win. The victory for the Shuckers gives them a series win, taking three of the first four games against the Suns.
The Suns led the contest from the fourth batter of the game, as Austin Dean's RBI double gave Jacksonville a 1-0 advantage. The Suns added three more runs in the inning with bases loaded walks to Peter Mooney and Cam Maron, and also James Roberts was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run, as Jacksonville chased Biloxi starter Javi Salas out of the game after only recording one out in the top of the first.
Jacksonville's 4-0 lead was cut in half in the bottom of the second when Victor Roache hit a two-run homer to make it 4-2. The Suns got two runs back quickly in the top of the third, when Maron hit a two-run double to centerfield to give Jacksonville a 6-2 edge.
Jacksonville starting pitcher Patrick Johnson, making his first start in affiliated baseball since 2012, went three and two-third innings allowing a pair of runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Chris Mazza followed with two and a third scoreless innings of work, as Jacksonville carried the 6-2 lead to the bottom of the seventh. Reliever Jose Jose allowed a two-run homer to Javier Betancourt in that inning that once again cut Jacksonville's lead in half at 6-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, right-hander Tyler Higgins (1-1) took over on the mound and walked the leadoff batter Tyrone Taylor. Three batters later Brandon Macias hit an RBI double to put the score at 6-5, and also put two men in scoring position with one out. Those runners scored when second baseman Avery Romero committed an error on a groundball hit by pinch-hitter Kyle Wren to give the Shuckers a 7-6 lead. Biloxi added a final run when Jacob Nottingham hit an RBI single to put the score at 8-6, which would be the final.
Higgins took the loss and blew his first save of the year, while Shuckers reliever Brett Lee (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless eighth, and Stephen Kohlscheen earned his second save of the year by turning in a perfect ninth.
The Suns will return to action in game fifth and final game of the series on Friday night against the Biloxi Shuckers at MGM Park at 8:10 p.m. ET. The Suns will start right-hander Ivan Pineyro (0-2, 9.35 ERA) against Biloxi right-hander Wei-Chung Wang (2-2, 3.48 ERA).
