Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS. - Donning Negro League throwback uniforms on Thursday night at MGM Park, the Biloxi Shuckers fell behind by four after just half an inning on Thursday night, but rallied with four runs in the eighth to steal an 8-6 win over the Jacksonville Suns. The win gives the Shuckers their sixth series victory of the season in seven tries, and just the third win when trailing after the sixth inning (3-10). The victory also gives Biloxi its largest come-from-behind victory, topping April 10's three-run comeback over the Chattanooga Lookouts.
Tyrone Taylor (0x3, 2 R, BB) started the eighth-inning rally with a walk against reliever Tyler Higgins. After a strikeout by Victor Roache (1x4, HR, 2 RBI, R), Nick Shaw (4x4, R) punched a single through the right side of the infield for his fourth hit of the game, and put the tying run on base. Brandon Macias (1x3, RBI, R, 2B, BB) continued his hot streak by ripping a double off the wall in right-center to plate Shaw and bring the Shuckers within a run.
Kyle Wren (0x1, RBI) drove in the tying and go-ahead run on a grounder that was mishandled by second baseman Avery Romero, allowing Shaw and Macias to score. Brett Phillips (1x5, R) singled to move the insurance run into scoring position for Javier Betancourt (1x5, HR, 2 RBI, R). With the shortstop at the plate, the base runners pulled off a double steal, moving two into a position to score. Wren would be thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by Betancourt.
Jacob Nottingham (2x5, RBI) brought home the insurance run on an infield single to third, bringing home Phillips for the 8-6 lead. The Shuckers' catcher extended his hitting streak to five games and has now hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games.
Shuckers' starting pitcher Javi Salas struggled in the first inning and recorded just one out before being lifted for Tristan Archer. The 24-year-old walked five batters and hit a man, as well as gave up a double while surrendering four runs on the night on 33 pitches - 12 strikes. The Coral Gables, Fla. has pitched just three innings in his last two starts after tossing a season-high six innings on April 25.
Biloxi responded with two runs in the second off of Roache's second home run of the season, a two-run blast over the wall in left, while wearing a Kansas City Monarchs throwback jersey brought Biloxi within two.
The deficit would jump back to four after Jacksonville plated two more runs in the third thanks to a two-run double to center by Cam Maron, scoring Brady Shoemaker and James Roberts.
Betancourt, also in the Monarchs threads closed the gap to two with a drive over the wall in left, scoring Chris McFarland (0x0, R, BB), on the 21-year-old's first Double-A home run. McFarland pinch hit and was wearing the jersey of the Negro League's Chattanooga Choo-Choos
Shuckers' manager Mike Guerrero relied on the combination of Archer (2.2 IP, 2 R, 2 H, SO), Jed Bradley (IP, 2 H, SO), Brooks Hall (3 IP, 2 H, 3 SO), Brett Lee (1-0, IP) and Stephen Kohlscheen (SV, 1, IP, SO) for the final 26 outs.
Biloxi will try to win its fourth game of the series on Friday night at MGM Park. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (2-2, 3.48) takes the mound for the Shuckers, while RHP Ivan Pineyro (0-2, 9.35) takes the bump for Jacksonville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:50 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app. The contest can also be seen on milb.tv.
