Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (33-34) started their final first-half series with a 7-5 loss at the hands of the West Virginia Power (31-36) on Thursday.

The Suns got on the board first, with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Justin Bloxom started the frame with a double to right field, and JP Ramirez followed with a two-run home run to right-center, giving the Suns the 2-0 lead. It was Ramirez' fifth home run of the season.

The lead did not last, as West Virginia responded with two runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

Two innings later, Hagerstown took the lead again with three runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Francisco Soriano led off the sixth with a triple to left-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bloxom. Four consecutive singles from Bloxom, Destin Hood, Ramirez, and Brett Newsome netted two more for the Suns giving Hagerstown a 5-2 lead.

Once more, the Power responded. In the bottom of the sixth, two home runs sunk the Suns. The first, a two-run blast off Suns starter Dan Rosenbaum, brought the home team within one run. Another two-run shot, this one off reliever Kyle Morrison, gave West Virginia the 6-5 lead.

The home team added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning, just a half-inning after Hagerstown squandered a bases-loaded, no-out situation without scoring.

Morrison (1-4) took the loss for the Suns by giving up two runs in two innings of work, while Mike Williams (1-0) received the win. Williams allowed three runs in two innings of work.

The Suns and Power will play the second game of their four-game series on Friday at 7:05 PM.
