Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - Augusta GreenJackets General Manager Nick Brown announced today that he will accept the proposition set forth yesterday by Savannah Sand Gnats President/General Manager John Katz.

Upon yesterday's announcement of this weekend's Georgia MEGA series, Katz challenged Brown in a friendly wager between the two head honchos in a release that can be seen in its entirety at the bottom of the page. Whichever team loses the division crown in Augusta this weekend will send their general manager to the winner's first playoff game to serve as a bat boy. It's a challenge Brown was eager to accept.

"Should we lose, I'll be more than willing to head to Savannah and don the uniform of the Sand Gnats as a bat boy because I'm from that area and will represent it well," Brown said. "However, if John Katz has to come here to serve as `Bat Man', in his words, he'll be given an actual `Batman' suit to wear for the occasion."

Brown was quicker with a response when asked why the wager was taking a Superhero-like turn.

"For starters, Katz said that he wanted to be a `Bat Man' so I figured it would be best to grant him his wish," Brown remarked. "Also, Katz isn't worthy of putting on our uniform and wearing the colors of a champion."

The GreenJackets won their last South Atlantic League Championship following the 2008 season. The Savannah Sand Gnats haven't sniffed the playoffs since 1996 when Nick Brown was a member of the staff in Savannah.

The series opens tonight at Lake Olmstead Stadium with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Chris Heston (2-6, 5.74) will take the mound for Augusta while Armando Rodriguez (4-4, 3.26) toes the rubber for the Sand Gnats.

Savannah's full release from yesterday is below:

Savannah, GA - Savannah Sand Gnats team President John Katz has had enough, and he's not going to take it anymore. Especially from former Sand Gnats GM (1998-2000) and current Augusta GreenJackets GM, Nick Brown.

"Nick Brown thinks he's Jackie Moon now?" asked Katz, fresh off an afternoon tarp pull at Historic Grayson Stadium. "If he isn't wrasslin' a bear, he's no Jackie Moon."

With five games to play in the first half, the Savannah Sand Gnats, the New York Mets affiliate, and the Augusta GreenJackets, the San Francisco Giants affiliate, are in a dead heat for first place in the Southern Division at 39-26. The Gnats play one more game at home against Rome tonight, and the GreenJackets finish a series in Charleston, before the Gnats head to Augusta for four games, Thursday-Sunday, to finish the first half.

"I'm so excited for the final five games of this half, I wanted to put myself on the line," said Katz. "It's time to put up or shut up for Jackieerrrr Nick Brown."

The challenge is simple: should the GreenJackets win the first-half, Katz will don a GreenJackets uniform and perform "Bat Man" duties for Augusta at their first home playoff game. If the Sand Gnats prevail, Brown will suit up for the Sand Gnats and perform the duties as a bat boy / sidekick (also known as "Robin" or "Barnacle Boy").

"That's the key here. If we win, Nick will be a sidekick in the dugout," said Katz. "If we lose, I will be Bat Man."

Officials from the GreenJackets were unavailable for comment, but were last seen at the sporting goods shop trying on baseball pants.

Single game tickets for all home games can also currently be obtained by calling 706-922-WINS or online at greenjacketsbaseball.com.
