Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (26-16, 60-49) ran their season-high winning streak to ten games on Sunday with a 10-4 win over the Tennessee Smokies (24-18, 58-53), pounding out 11 hits in the process at Bragan Field.
Jacksonville jumped on Smokies starter A.J. Morris (3-2) for six runs in the first inning and another in the second, and never allowed Tennessee to crawl any closer than five runs afterward. Bryan Evans (4-3) allowed two earned runs in five solid innings and earned the win in front of 3,183 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
"We got it going early," said Suns manager Andy Barkett following the game. "It was nice to get a lead early, especially with the winning streak we have going."
Zack Cox's RBI single off Morris started the Suns' early onslaught, but it was Danny Pertusati's three-run double that truly opened up the scoring, giving Jacksonville a 4-0 advantage. Chris Gutierrez followed immediately with a two-run home run, his second blast of the season.
Javier Baez got the Smokies closer with a two-run double, but J.T. Realmuto delivered the knockout blow in the fourth with another bases clearing double, this one to give the Suns a 10-2 lead.
After starter Evans departed, Matt Neil retired nine straight batters over three perfect innings of relief, and Pete Adrelczyk faced the minimum in the ninth inning to seal Jacksonville's tenth straight victory.
"[Evans] pitched great," Barkett said. "And the bullpen did a real nice job to close it out."
The Suns finished with 11 hits, and four players tallied multi-hit games. Danny Black, Zack Cox, Danny Pertusati and Chris Gutierrez all notched two hits, and Jacksonville recorded more walks (five) than strikeouts (four).
Jacksonville will seek its 11th straight victory on Monday in game four of the five-game series against the Smokies, with the Suns having already clinched the series with three straight wins. Jacksonville is scheduled to send left-hander Justin Nicolino (1-2, 6.43) to the mound against Smokies' right-hander Matt Loosen (1-2, 6.92). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
