Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Prescott Valley, AZ 3/14/08 - Cory Urquhart scored four goals, the most against the Gorillas by a single player this year, spurring the Sundogs to a 7-2 win over Amarillo at the Tim's Toyota Center on Friday night. Urquhart became the first Sundog in franchise history to score four goals in a game in just his 11th game with the team. Alex Leavitt also had a four point night for the Dogs, getting an assist on every Urquhart goal and increasing his season total to 111 points, 9 more than Laredo's Jeff Bes who trails Leavitt in the CHL scoring race. Amarillo would out-shoot Arizona 35-26 in the game, while going 1-5 on the power-play and surrendering two man advantage goals on eight chances to the league's best power-play unit.
Amarillo would leave the first period tied 1-1 despite out-shooting the Dogs 17-12, as Urqhart would score for Arizona and Jason Chafe would notch his ninth of the year for the Gorillas.
The second frame would see Arizona open up a 5-1 lead, with Urquhart getting his second, third and fourth goals of the game to go along with a tally from Jon Landry. The assault by Leavitt and Urquhart was highlighted by a 2 on 1 late in the third period when Leavitt took the puck down the right wing boards, and all in one motion faked a shot then slid the puck through his legs to a wide open Urquhart in the slot. Urquhart would tap the puck into a wide open net to finish the play and complete his four goal night.
Goaltender Dan McWhinney was replaced in nets after the first two periods, surrendering five goals on 18 shots, leaving Dan Bauer in net to finish the game for Amarillo. The Sundogs would get two more in the final frame to complete their third straight victory over the Gorillas, with the lone Amarillo highlight coming late in the game when David Nimmo scored on a 5-on-3 power-play advantage with 4:01 to play in regulation. The goal gave Nimmo 39 on the year, which breaks the Gorillas all-time single season goal scoring record, previously held by Scott Wray who scored 38 in 2005-06. Nimmo leads all rookies in scoring and has five games remaining to add to his stats.
Amarillo won't have to wait very long for a chance at redemption, as they face Arizona again tomorrow night for the eighth and final meeting of the season. The game will once again be at Tim's Toyota Center with game time set for 9:05 PM CST.
