
Sundogs Move into Sixth Spot with 6-2 Win

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Odessa Jackalopes skated in a Southern Conference battle Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Both clubs are fighting for a playoff spot as the CHL post-season approaches. The Sundogs would outshoot the Jackalopes 41-24 in the contest in route to a 6-2 victory. With the win Arizona moves into the Southern Conference's sixth playoff spot and just three points back of fifth place Austin.
The Sundogs continued their trend of scoring first and early as Karl Sellan would give his club a 1-0 lead just 1:04 in the game on a pass from Dmitri Leonov. Mike Ramsay would even the score for Odessa as he would find the back of the net at the 15:38 mark. Mark Cole would assist on the power play goal. Arizona would finish 0-for-5 with the man advantage in the first period.
At 16:43 of the second period the Sundogs would take a 2-1 lead on their first power play goal of the night. Chris Greene would collect his fifth goal on the season from Ryan Steeves. Through two periods the Sundogs were just 1-for-12 with the man advantage. With less than three minutes to play in the third period Odessa's Jay Latulippe and Alex Dunn would receive penalties totaling four minutes each giving the Sundogs a lengthy 5-on-3 advantage.
Unable to convert on a two-man advantage to close the middle frame, Arizona would begin the third with a 5-on-3 power play for 1:09. With 11 seconds remaining in the 5-on-3 defenseman Chris Bartolone would fire a shot top shelf from the left circle over the shoulder of Jackalopes' goalie Mike Gorman to give his club a 3-1 lead. Dan Laperriere and Brent Kelly would set up the Sundogs' second power play goal of the night. With 9:58 to play in the third, Brent Kelly would grab his league-leading 35th goal of the season from David Svagrovsky and Cory Stillman. Kelly would pick up a rebound in front of the net pulling the puck past Gorman to give the Sundogs a 4-2 lead. At the 15:27 mark the Sundogs would take a three-goal lead as Kelly would grab notch his second goal and third point of the night from Stillman. Less than a minute later Leonov would grab his second point of the night on an unassisted goal to eventually give the Sundogs a 6-2 victory.
Arizona's Kris Mayotte appeared in net and gathered his second win in as many games. Mayotte stopped 22 of 24 shots while Mike Gorman stopped 35 of 41 shots in the 6-2 loss. Ranked second in the league in power play conversions at 19.66%, the Sundogs could only convert on 2-of-12 chances. Odessa finished 1-for-6 with the man advantage. The two clubs skate again tomorrow night at 7:00pm at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
