Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - In a game where both teams rallied back to the lead, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs had the final say defeating the Rocky Mountain Rage hockey team 6-5 in overtime tonight at the Broomfield Event Center.
Bossier-Shreveport came out to a quick two goal lead in their first three shots on net. Winger Jason Williamson notched the first point of the game for the Mudbugs at 3:26 of the first period on the powerplay. Defenseman Brian Suthlerland added the team's second just under one minute later with the first goal of his professional career right off the faceoff.
Rocky Mountain wasted no time and answered back 59 seconds later with a goal by Brett DeCecco fired from the left circle past Mudbugs goaltender Adam Hanna.
Despite being outshot by the Rage in the first period 10-8, the Mudbugs added two more goals at the end of the period on the powerplay by Dan Wildfong and Chris Gustafson to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Rocky Mountain pulled goaltender Trevor Cunning in exchange for David Guerrera at the start of the second period. Rage defenseman Dan Vandermeer fired a shot in net from the point at 11:12, but the goal was waived off when Trevor Weisgerber was called for goaltender interference.
Late in the second, it was Rocky Mountain's turn to see scoring. Center Matic Kralj fired the puck in net on a four-on-three powerplay opportunity, cutting Bossier's lead in half at 15:57. Just 12 seconds later and before celebration ended in the arena, Kralj picked up a pass from Clay Plume after the faceoff, did a spin move and backhanded the puck in net surprising Mudbugs goaltender Hanna. Bossier-Shreveport changed goaltenders following the goal, putting Guy St. Vincent in net due to an injury to Hanna.
In the third period, the Rage picked up where they left off. DeCecco wristed the puck in net for the 4-4 game tying goal at 1:12 on the powerplay. Weisgerber and Mark Wires were credited with assists on the play. At 7:16, the Rage would see their first lead of the game. Winger Adam Loncan skated in down the right wing and fired a slap shot, grazing the right shoulder of St. Vincent bouncing twice off the back of the net. The Rage was awarded a penalty shot at 9:35 of the third period, but St. Vincent was able to stop the shot by Nathan Rosychuk keeping Rage ahead of the Mudbugs 5-4.
Just as players and fans were thinking that the Rage had this game won. Bossier-Shreveport's Ryan Fairbarn tied the game at 16:08, which would eventually force overtime. Bossier's Chris Abbott would score the game winner at 17 seconds. Assists were credited to Cam Abbott and Quade Lightbody.
The Rage improves to 11-29-5 (27 points) for fourth place in the northwest division and the Mudbugs improve to 30-12-5 (65 points) for second place in the northeast division.
