Sun sets on Shorebirds

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, Md.- Hagerstown's Colton Willems, a former first round draft pick, displayed his promise on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, silencing Shorebird bats until the ninth inning to win his fifth game of the season. A two-out RBI double by Joe Mahoney yielded an unearned run for Delmarva, the only blemish on Willems' sensational start to begin the second half of the season. The Suns jumped out to a 7-0 lead by pouncing on Shorebird starter Tony Butler in the early innings. South Atlantic League Home Run Derby Champion Michael Burgess drilled his 15th homer of the season to lead off the second inning and put Hagerstown on top 1-zip. After a couple outs and a couple walks, Boomer Whiting drilled his second dinger of the season, a three-run blast that cushioned the Suns to a 4-0 edge. Hagerstown plated one more in the third on Burgess' RBI single and knocked Butler out of the game after three innings. While Robert Neigebauer and Shane Matthews allowed just two runs on two hits over the final six innings, the Shorebird offense could never get going against Willems, who beat the Birds for the first time this year.
