
Braves rocked by Sand Gnats

Rome, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Rome Braves 5-4 Thursday evening at State Mutual Stadium in front of 3,339 fans.
Savannah got on board in the second, after Joaquin Rodriguez singled, and reached third on a Francisco Pena double. Richard Pena grounded out to score Rodriguez and advancing F. Pena to third. The Sand Gnats took the lead 2-0 after F. Pena scored on a BJ Hubbert single. In the third the Braves scored when Adam Coe reached on with a walk and advanced to third on a CJ Lee double. Jason Heyward grounded out to drive in Coe making the score 2-1.
In the eighth Rome took the lead 3-2, after Freddie Freeman singled, advanced to second after Michael Fisher reached on a throwing error made by Greg Veloz. Freeman later scored after a Cody Johnson single which advanced Fisher to second. Benji Johnson then had a base hit to score Fisher giving Rome the lead.
Savannah tied the game 3-3 in the ninth when Joaquin Rodriguez walked and later scored on a Carlos Guzman double. In the tenth inning, Greg Veloz tripled and later scored on a Craig Casey single allowing the Sand Gnats to take the lead 4-3. They added an insurance run on a groundout for the 5-3 score. Rome scored one run in the bottom of the tenth but the Savannah bullpen held on for the 5-4 final.
Steven Cheney (1-0) gets the win for the Sand Gnats while Cory Gearrin (3-2) is tagged with the loss for the Braves.
Rome plays again tomorrow evening at seven in game two of the four day series against Savannah. Harbin Clinic and the Rome News Tribune present cereal bowl give-a-way to the first 1000 fans with paid admission.
