
Captains Blanked by Lakewood to Begin 2nd Half

(Lakewood, NJ) - It was a sluggish start to the second half for the Lake County Captains as Julian Sampson pitched six scoreless innings and the Lakewood BlueClaws had all but one batter in the line up reach base, as they beat the Captains 5-0 on Thursday. With the loss to start the second half, this is the first time since April that the Captains have not been in first place. The Captains went into first place on April 22nd and stayed in first place the rest of the first half on their way to winning the SAL Northern Division title. This is the first time all year that the Captains have been below the .500 mark.
The BlueClaws went out in front in the bottom of the third inning against Captains starter Chris Archer when T.J. Warren got an infield single and went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a ground out and scored on another wild pitch to make it 1-0. The Claws added to the lead in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Joel Naughton to make it 2-0.
The Blue Claws made it 4-0 when they scored two runs off of reliever Josh Judy in the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly by Dennis Winn plated one run while a Judy wild pitched scored the second run. The BlueClaws tacked on an unearned run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Warren to make it 5-0.
Archer went 3.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits, walking three and striking out three and watched his record drop to 2-7. Josh Judy relieved Archer with one out in the fourth inning and pitched 2.1 innings allowing three runs, two earned. Joanniel Montero came on after Judy going 1.1 scoreless innings. Gary Campfield pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Sampson got the win to up his record to 4-1.
The Captains and the BlueClaws play game two of the four game series on Friday at 7:05 PM as the Captains send LHP Ryan Morris (6-1, 2.50) to the mound against the Claws LHP Jacob Diekman (1-4, 5.35). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
The Captains return home on Monday, June 23rd for a seven-game homestand against Delmarva, Lakewood and Hagerstown. Monday's promotion will be Buck Night at Classic Park with $1 hot dogs, beer, and soda. Tuesday is Taco Tuesday featuring $1 tacos sold at the Tex-Mex Madness concession stands. The News-Herald High School Home Run Derby will continue after the game on Tuesday. The contest goes on after every Tuesday home Captains game with the finals following the game on July 8th.
Tickets for all Captains home games including the 2008 SAL Playoffs are on sale at the Classic Park box office, by phone at 440-954-WINS (9467) or at captainsbaseball.com. Tickets for the Playoffs remain the same as regular season game tickets, $9 reserved seat, $7 bleachers, juniors, and seniors, $6 lawn. Lawn seats for the Playoffs will only be sold once the reserved seats and bleachers are sold out. The $7 group rate will still apply to groups of 20 or more.
