Struggles Continue at Flint

January 13, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release

The Sarnia Sting made their way south of the border to face the Flint Firebirds Saturday night.

This would be the sixth meeting between the two clubs this season, with Sarnia winning four out of five matchups against the Firebirds heading into this game.

The Firebirds struck first, with a goal by Jake Durham a couple minutes into the first period. The Firebirds put the pressure on Sarnia early on, but Hugo Leufvenius' 26th goal on the season off a breakaway tied the game at one.

Sarnia controlled puck possession for most of the second period; however, an opportunistic Flint team made most of their chances and scored three in the second frame. Things got physical at the end of the period when a melee involving several Sting and Firebirds players resulted in a 4 on 4 to end the period.

In the final frame, the Firebirds continued to roll. Jake Durham scored 1:12 into the period to complete the hat trick and give the Firebirds a four goal lead.

A penalty on Flint's Hakon Nilsen, gave the Sting an opportunity to score. Several seconds into the powerplay, Hugo Leufvenius got his second point of the night, an assist, off a Mitch Eliot blast from the blueline to close the gap to 5-2.

Hunter Holmes added a another goal for the Firebirds, as they take the win 6-2.
