Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals closed out the weekend tonight against the Erie Otters at the Tribute Communities Centre. With a big two-point performance over the Barrie Colts last night on the road and a clutch overtime win over the Petes on Thursday, the Gens held a 25-15-2-0 record heading into the contest. Looking to grab their third straight victory, the Gens aimed to take down the Otters and finish off their perfect weekend.
Before puck drop, the Generals honoured the players who played in the recent World Junior Hockey Championship in Victoria and Vancouver. Nando Eggenberger and Nico Gross with Switzerland and Kyle Keyser with the U.S. received the honour for representing their respective country on the international stage in a well-played tournament.
1st Period:
The Gens came out of the gate ready to play, wasting no time potting the game's first goal. The tally came from Danyk Drouin who jammed the puck in on Erie goaltender and former General Cole Ceci to put Oshawa up 1-0 early. Just moments later, Gens goaltender Kyle Keyser made a big stop to keep the Otters off the board. With momentum on their side, the Gens offense showed no signs of stopping with Ty Tullio burying a rebound to give the Gens a two-goal lead. The assists on the goal went to newly named captain Kyle MacLean and Giovanni Vallati. With five minutes remaining in the period, Anthony Salinitri had a dangerous chance in alone in front of Erie's net but had his backhand shot turned away by Ceci. A minute later, the Otters gained the Gens zone and forward Danial Singer ripped a top shelf shot past Keyser to put Erie within one. With just over one-minute left in the period, the Otters got called for a hooking penalty to give the Gens the first powerplay of the game. While Serron Noel came close with a tip in front, Oshawa wasn't able to score in the first half of the man advantage, giving them just under a minute of powerplay time to start the second period.
2nd Period:
The period began with the last bit of powerplay time for Oshawa from Erie's first period penalty, but the Gens couldn't capitalize on the opportunity and the score stayed at 2-1. Back at 5-on-5, Otters forward Danial Singer got a breakaway opportunity that he was once again able to find the back of the net on, giving him his second of the night and tying the game at two. Seven minutes into the period, each team was called for roughing penalties and just seconds later both added another penalty to put the play at 3-on-3. With tons of room on the ice, the Gens nearly took back the lead on a chance from newly acquired General Brett Neumann, but his shot hit the post and the puck stayed out of the net. At even strength, the Otters were sprung on another breakaway chance and made the most of it, putting the puck over Keyser to give them a 3-2 lead over the Gens. With under six minutes left in the second, Neumann and Tullio went on a 2-on-1 chance with Tullio feeding Neumann who had his one-timer saved by Ceci. At the three-minute mark, Serron Noel drew a tripping penalty to receive a powerplay. Capitalizing on the man advantage, brand new Gen Brandon Saigeon sniped the puck off the bar and in to tie up the game at three. After the goal, the Otters took another penalty for holding to give the hot Gens powerplay another opportunity. Keeping up their strong play on the man advantage, Nando Eggenberger found a loose puck in front of the net and buried it, giving the Gens a 4-3 lead heading into the game's final frame.
3rd Period:
The Gens began the period with a chance from Anthony Salinitri speeding into Erie's end 1-on-1 that resulted in him crashing into Ceci and receiving a goaltender interference call. A strong effort on the resulting penalty kill allowed the Gens to hold off the Otters and remain ahead by one. With eleven minutes left in the game, Oshawa got called for cross-checking to put their PK back to work. With a couple of huge saves from Kyle Keyser, the Gens were able to kill off the infraction and hold onto their 4-3 lead. After the penalty expired, the Gens came close to adding to their lead when Brandon Saigeon put a backhand shot off the post in front of the net. With two minutes left in the game, Serron Noel came in on a breakaway that was turned away by Ceci, giving the Otters a chance to pull the goaltender and give them an extra man. With solid defensive play in the final minute of the game, the Gens turned away the surging Otters to come away with a 4-3 win.
After picking up their third straight victory tonight, the Gens will look to keep rolling as they head to Kingston on Friday to battle the Frontenacs before returning home on Sunday against the Flint Firebirds.
