Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds had chances late against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans but were unable to cash in as they lost 5-2 on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The loss is the third straight for the Shorebirds (5-8) against the Pelicans (8-5).
It was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings until Myrtle Beach broke through with two runs in the fifth. Ethan Hearn doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a groundout. After Reginald Preciado then beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners. After a hit batter, Pete Crow-Armstrong came up with the bases loaded and ripped a single to center to plate two runs to put Myrtle Beach ahead.
Delmarva answered with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Luis Valdez singled to start the frame and then stole second. After going to second on a groundout, Valdez scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Jacob Wetzel got that run back and one more for Myrtle Beach in the seventh with a two-run homer, his first of the season, making it a 4-1 game.
The Shorebirds scratched out a run in the seventh on a Ryan Higgins RBI single but saw a potential breakthrough moment slip by the wayside as Josué Cruz bounced into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Myrtle Beach added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Wetzel sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
Richard Gallardo (1-0) worked an efficient five scoreless innings to get the win for Myrtle Beach. He allowed just two hits while striking out five.
Juan De Los Santos (0-1) took the tough luck loss for Delmarva. De Los Santos allowed one run on three hits and a walk, striking out five.
Tyler Santana picked up his first save of the year for Myrtle Beach, allowing a run over two innings on three hits and two walks, striking out two.
