Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans spread their scoring out with two runs in the fourth through seventh innings to win their second straight over the Delmarva Shorebirds 8-3 on Thursday night. Myrtle Beach moves to 7-5 with the victory in game three of the series, while Delmarva falls to 5-7. It was the second-straight night with double-digit hits for the Pelicans.

Three players collected multiple hits for the Pelicans with Miguel Fabrizio (3-5, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI) becoming the second Myrtle Beach player to fall a hit shy of the cycle in the last two games. Jacob Wetzel (2-4, 2B, RBI, R, BB) collected a pair of base knocks while Kevin Alcantara (2-5, 2B, R) tallied his third multi-hit performance in his last five games.

The Myrtle Beach pitching staff posted their sixth-consecutive game with double-digit strikeouts with 14 on Thursday night to just three walks. Walker Powell (2-0) took the win after holding Delmarva to just one earned run off two hits in his 4 1/3 innings while striking out a career-high seven batters. Starter Luke Little lasted 2 2/3 innings with two earned runs off a pair of hits with one walk and two punchouts.

The Shorebirds were held to just four hits the entire game with Luis Valdez (1-3, 2 RBI) leading the team with a two-run single in the second. Josue Cruz (1-1, 2B, RBI, BB) knocked the only extra-base hit of the game for the Shorebirds with an RBI double in the sixth after coming off the bench.

Raul Rangel (0-1) took the loss with just 2/3 of an inning pitched, giving up two earned runs off two hits and a pair of walks. Shorebirds starter Daniel Federman lasted the first four frames with two earned runs off five hits and four strikeouts to a lone walk.

After the Pelicans stranded two runners on in the top half of the second, the Shorebirds jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in their half. Davis Tavarez led off with an infield single to Little's right side. Following a walk to Isaac Bellony, Tavarez stole third to put runners on the corners. Bellony moved to second on a groundout, and after Little struck out Moises Ramirez for the second out, Valdez floated a single to right to score both runners and gave Delmarva a 2-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach started their four-inning stretch of runs with two coming home in the top of the fourth. Wetzel led off with a double to right field and came home on Fabrizio's triple to deep center field to put the Pelicans on the board. Malcom Quintero rolled a single into right field to score Fabrizio and the Pelicans tied the game 2-2.

With Walker Powell dealing on the mound, the Pelicans lineup took advantage with another pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Rangel came out of the bullpen and after retiring the first batter he faced, Alcantara doubled on a fly ball to right. He came home on Wetzel's second hit on a ground ball single up the middle to put Myrtle Beach in front. Wetzel stole second and later moved to third as Fabrizio struck out. Walks to Quintero and Yeison Santana loaded the bases and knocked Rangel out of the game. Preston Price took over on the mound and threw a wild pitch behind catcher Michael Mantecon that scored Wetzel and moved the visitor's lead to 4-2.

Another two runs came in for the Pelicans in their half of the sixth. Liam Spence drew a walk to lead off the inning but remained on first as the following two batters were retired. Spence moved into scoring position on a stolen base and was hit home on Alcantara's infield single to short. Shortstop Isaac De Leon threw the ball wild to first as Alcantara got to second, and the first baseman Cruz committed the second throwing error of the play on his errant throw to third as Alcantara moved 90 feet away from home. After Wetzel walked on four pitches, Fabrizio cranked a double to left to plate Alcantara for his second run batted in and the Pelicans lead moved to 6-2.

Delmarva got one back in their half as Ryan Higgins rolled a one-out single up the middle. He scored from first on Cruz's double to right to make it 6-3 Myrtle Beach. Powell struck out Tavarez and Bellony grounded out to halt the rally.

The two-run innings capped off with two more in the top of the seventh for the Pelicans. Santana started by tapping a ball back to Price on the mound. After fielding it cleanly, Price's throw went to the left side of the base and to the wall as Santana moved to second. James Triantos flew the next pitch to deep right for a double as Santana moved to third. Spence brought home Santana on a sacrifice fly to right and Ezequiel Pagan scored Triantos on a sacrifice fly to center two batters later to make it 8-3 Myrtle Beach.

With back-to-back wins, the Pelicans have taken a 2-1 lead in the series. Game four is scheduled for Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
