Augusta GreenJackets News Release
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: With the Atlanta Braves, World Series Champions trophy in attendance at SRP the Augusta GreenJackets (6-7) impressed with a bounce-back victory to tie the series with the Fayetteville WoodPeckers (4-9), 5-2.
The game got off to an unideal start for Augusta as starting pitcher, Adam Shoemaker left the game with an injury after three pitches. Recently added, Benjamin Dum replaced Shoemaker and finished off the inning but Woodpeckers produced a run on an RBI single by Joey Loperfido.
But that lead wouldn't last long as the GreenJackets cleanup hitter Adam Zebrowski got that run back with an RBI double into the left-field corner with two outs to score Caleb Durbin, tying the score at one.
Benjamin Dum continued to pitch well as the right-hander gave up nothing in the next two innings as he retired the next six hitters in order, including striking out the side in the second.
Another newcomer, Isrrael De La Cruz also made his debut by relieving Dum in the fourth inning and he started his night with a scoreless frame to set the table for his offense to take the lead.
The GreenJackets struck for two runs in the bottom half of the inning starting with an RBI double Mahki Backstrom to the opposite field as the lefty made it 2-1 Augusta. They'd add one more on a wild pitch that plated home Brandol Mezquita to up the lead to 3-1.
De La Cruz continued into the fifth inning by mowing through the Woodpeckers 1-2-3. Miguel Peña took over in the sixth inning and he followed suit of the previous relievers by shutting down Fayetteville in the 3 batters thanks to a couple of strikeouts.
James Acuna had the seventh inning and he would get the job done by throwing up a zero in his first inning with the help of a pickoff to catch Cody Orr in a rundown to end the frame. He would roll in the eight by putting down the Woodpeckers in straight order to keep it a 3-1 game.
Mahki Backstrom came through with another big swing in the eighth inning with a two-run triple down the right field to advance the lead to 5-1, his second three-bagger of the season capped off his 3 RBI night, a season-best.
Fayetteville made things interesting by scoring a run in the ninth inning by Juan Mateo slammed the door by striking out Freddy Guilamo to end the game and conclude a 5-2 win in front of a crowd of 5,469 during the GreenJackets first Friday BUZZFest at SRP Park.
Mahki Backstrom's 3 RBI night led the way offensively for Augusta but the relief pitching of Benjamin Dum, Isrrael De La Cruz, Miguel Peña, James Acuna, and Juan Mateo was the top story as they picked up their starter Adam Shoemaker in a major way by holding the Fayetteville offense in check.
Augusta looks to take command of the series as Game 5 from SRP Park begins at 6:05 p.m. with Landon Leach getting the ball for the GreenJackets versus Ryan Gusto for Fayetteville.
