Strong Second Period Propels Broncos Over Pats

Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos earned a 7-2 win over the Regina Pats on Friday night in the first half of a home and home set.
It wasn't the start the Broncos wanted as they trailed 2-1 after one period of play. Aaron Krestanowich and Same Oremba bookended the period with Pats goals, while Conor Geekie scored for the Broncos on the powerplay. It was Geekie's 100th goal in his 200th WHL game as well.
While the Broncos didn't come out of the gates as they would have liked, Assistant Coach Regan Darby said they were able to move forward and play their game afterwards.
"We continue to challenge our guys on the road," Darby said. We want to have better starts, but we seem to find a way, like in the second period, we obviously have a good response. We come back, we get a few goals. Our power play is rolling a little bit here."
In the second, the Broncos were led by four unanswered goals in a span of 4:10, as Luke Mistelbacher, Jakub Dvorak, Clarke Caswell, and Brady Birnie flipped the game over with goals to make it 5-2 before eight minutes had elapsed in the second period.
Pats netminder Ewan Huet was pulled after the fourth goal in the second after just 12 shots on goal, giving way for Kelton Pyne who stopped 12 the rest of the way for Regina.
Luke Mistelbacher added another goal in the second, a powerplay marker to give the Broncos a 6-2 lead after two, one they would hold onto into the third, where Josh Filmon joined the action to add one more goal to the Broncos tally.
Darby added that with six different goal scorers, sometimes the offense finds a way to blossom in games.
"it's good to see, guys were throwing pucks at net and they seem to be going in," he said. "Didn't have a ton of shots but we were getting good looks and sometimes it's just puck luck."
The Broncos outshot the Pats 27-24 in the contest and were 2-for-6 on the powerplay. The Bronco penalty kill was 3-for-4.
The Broncos are back at home on Saturday, taking on the Pats once more.
