Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, NY - The Richmond Riverdogs took an early lead thanks to a funny bounce, on their way to a 4-2 win over the Elmira Jackals Wednesday night at the First Arena.

Coming into the game winless this season, Richmond took an early lead with one of the strangest goals you will ever see in the first period. With the rest of his teammates on a line change, defenseman Dan Vandermeer took a slap shot/dump in that buzzed high over the cross bar, ricocheted off the back boards, came back over the cross bar and then kicked back into the net behind goaltender Nick Boucher for a bizarre unassisted goal a 9:30. Rafal Martynowski made it 2-0 Richmond with a goal at 11:19 from Elmira College graduate Jason Cassells and the 0-5 Riverdogs would take that lead to the break

In the second period, Elmira again out-shot their opponents, but failed to find the net. Martynowski scored his second of the night, a power play goal, at 7:48 from Vandermeer and Brian Goudie to extend their lead to three.

In the third period the Jackals we held scoreless by Richmond goaltender Mike D'Alessandro until the final minute of the game. With Brian Goudie in the penalty box for a late double-minor, Chris Chaput finally put the Jackals on the board by snapping a wrist-shot into the top shelf at 19:16, assisted by Jarrett Konkle and Trevor Burgess. Elmira would cash in a second time on the double-minor as Konkle blasted home a shot at 19:42 to make it 3-2 with 18.7 seconds remaining in the game.

Assisting on the power play goal was Burgess and Kevin Cooper. However, with goalie Nick Boucher on the bench for the extra attacker, Elmira lost the next face off and eight seconds later David Brosseau's shot from the neutral zone found the empty net to seal the game for Richmond 4-2.

Despite allowing goals on Elmira's final two shots, Richmond goaltender Mike D'Alessandro stopped an impossible 49-of-51 for the Riverdogs first win of the season. Elmira's Nick Boucher was solid again in goal, making 31 saves on 34 shots, but his offensive support came along too little, too late.

The Jackals will travel up to Glens Falls, New York to face off with Adirondack Friday night at 7:30 pm. Elmira then returns for two games at the First Arena against the Quad City Mallards, 7:05 pm Saturday and 4:05 pm Sunday.
