Storm Wins Sixth Straight

December 28, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release

(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm ran the team's home record to 15-1-1 with a 3-0 victory over the Johnstown Chiefs at the Toledo Sports Arena behind the stellar goaltending of veteran, Tom Draper. Toledo has now won six in a row and remains atop the Northwest Division with a record of 22-6-2=46.

After a scoreless first period, the Storm struck first for the nineteenth this season when Wes Mason jammed one home for his first goal since being re-assigned to the Storm from the Milwaukee Admirals on Thursday. Nathan Lutz started the sequence with a blast from the left point that ricocheted off the blade of Nick Parillo's stick and over to Mason, who was planted at the right side of the net. Mason slipped it behind Johnstown goaltender, Peter Aubry, to give the Storm a 1-0 lead at 7:57 of the second period.

Toledo is now 18-0-1 when scoring first. A minute and twenty-two seconds later, with the Storm on a 4-on-3 power play, Paul Ballantyne gave the Storm a two goal lead when he stepped up and ripped a loose puck from between the hashmarks over the left arm of Aubry for his second goal in as many games.

Trevor Read finished the scoring at 15:09 of the second with another power play goal. He ripped a slap shot from the high slot that slipped through Aubry low stick side to make it 3-0. Although the Storm poured the pressure on Aubry (ending up with 43 shots), the difference in the game may have been Draper, who only faced twenty-two shots, but many of them-particularly early in the contest-called for difficult stops. In picking up his first ECHL career shutout, the 16-year pro won his third game in as many starts for the Storm.
