Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Anchorage whittled a 4-0 deficit down to 4-3 late in the third period of Friday night's clash with Idaho, but two goals in the final 2:05 helped the Steelheads hold off the Aces 6-3 before 2,710 at Sullivan Arena.

Idaho completely outplayed Anchorage in the first period, firing 17 shots on goal and scoring courtesy of Dan Shermerhorn (just 91 seconds into the game), Martin Vasut, and Jon Shockey. When the Steelheads pushed their lead to 4-0 on a goal by Joe Rybar at 8:38 of the middle frame, a rout appeared to be in the offing. But the Aces converted a power play to finally get on the board with 3:10 left in the period, as Carl Drakensjo redirected a Mike Marostega shot from the point past Idaho goaltender Jason Cugnet.

After squandering a pair of power play chances to open the third period, Anchorage moved within 4-2 as Yvan Corbin netted his 14th of the year with 8:17 left in the game. Dean Larson, who had assisted on the first two Aces' goals, cut the gap to one by flicking in his own rebound with 5:28 still to play. Anchorage continued to press, and posted its second-highest shot total with 31 for the game, but Idaho's Cory Morgan converted an odd-man rush at 17:56 to seal the Steelheads' ninth straight win over the Aces this season. Marty Flichel's empty-netter with 32.4 seconds remaining accounted for the final margin.

Anchorage, still mired in the WCHL cellar, falls to 9-20-1 on the season and now has been outscored 45-19 by first-place Idaho (21-6-3) in the nine head-to-head match-ups this season. The two teams continue the series at Sullivan Arena tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
