Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - The Tri-City Storm scored twice in the final 2:05 of the third to overcome a two-goal deficit and force overtime, but the Madison Capitols scored three times in the shootout to knock the Storm, 3-2.
The Storm goals, by Max Humitz and John Marino, came with netminder Jake Kielly pulled, allowing Tri-City to earn a point and move into sole possession of first place in the conference.
Marino's goal with 58 seconds left sent the crowd into a frenzy on his fourth of the season.
Jake Kielly took the tough-luck loss in the skills competition with 21 saves. Drew Hotte allowed the two Storm goals separated by 1:07 in a 36-save win.
The four-goal third period started with Madison momentum, capitalizing on a Dmitri Buinitsky left-slot shot at 6:28 of the final frame. Next, with 2:51 left, Luke McElhenie blew the puck past Kielly to give the Caps a 2-0 edge.
McElhenie's goal set the stage for the Storm's late-stage goals; with Kielly pulled and an extra attacker on, Madison forward Marcel Godbout flipped the puck wide right of the empty net. The miss gave Tri-City new life.
Jake Wahlin slithered a puck to the left-side boards and Humitz shot it from a severe angle over Hotte for the first time in the game. The marker came just 46 seconds after Madison made it 2-0.
With momentum on Tri-City's side, Wade Allison extended an offensive zone chance by skating around net and finding Marino from the right slot. The 18-year-old defenseman ripped a slapper to the left post by Hotte.
The tying goal allowed Tri-City to get the overtime and move into sole possession of first because of Lincoln's 2-0 loss at Fargo.
After a nearly stoppage-less overtime, Madison scored on three straight shootout attempts. Brandon Duhaime and Alex Limoges scored in the shootout for the Storm.
Both power plays failed the score; the Storm was 0-for-5 and Madison went 0-for-4.
Next Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5, the Storm takes to the road to face a pair of Western Conference games. Friday the Storm faces Omaha, while Saturday's game is against Sioux City.
