Special Teams Doom Phantoms in Blowout Loss

February 27, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms suffered their worst loss of the season in possibly the biggest game of the year, falling to the Bloomington Thunder 10-1. After being swept by Bloomington, the Phantoms are now five points out of a playoff spot with just 13 games left in the campaign.

The contest started out well for Youngstown, carrying play for long stretches of the opening period. The Phantoms would cash in on the power play late in the first frame, when Jason Cotton's wrist shot beat Bloomington netminder Hayden Lavigne.

Youngstown seemed like it would take a one goal advantage into the first intermission, until Alec Mehr deflected a shot past Colin DeAugustine with just 1.4 seconds remaining in the period.

The two teams would remain tied for the first half of the second frame, until Blake Gober tallied his 8th goal of the season to give the Thunder a lead they would never relinquish. Patrick Curry would add a power play goal just minutes later to extend the Bloomington advantage to two goals.

Things really went south for Youngstown just minutes later, when defenseman Kris Myllari was assessed a five minute major for elbowing and received a game misconduct. The Thunder would go on to score three times on the ensuing major power play. Bloomington converted six of eight power play chances throughout the game, and also added a shorthanded tally.

The Phantoms will be back at the Covelli Centre next weekend to host the Madison Capitals. Friday will be the Phantoms annual Tavern Night, while Saturday will be the annual Scout Night game.
