Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports' seven-game homestand finished the way it started, with plenty of offensive frustrations and, ultimately, a loss. The Ports were shut out for the second time in three games by the Visalia Rawhide on Monday night, this time by a final of 2-0.

Visalia scored the only two runs of the game over the first two innings. In the top of the first, Chuck Taylor opened the game with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Domingo Leyba. In the second, Dawel Lugo doubled to open the frame. After back-to-back strikeouts recorded by Ports starter Casey Meisner (0-7), a wild pitch was throw that allowed Lugo to take third. Ports catcher Iolana Akau tried to throw out Lugo and fired down to third, but made an errant throw that went into left field and allowed Lugo to score and make it a 2-0 lead.

The second run would be unearned for Meisner and despite a solid effort, he suffered his seventh straight loss after going six innings and allowing five hits while matching a season-high with seven strikeouts.

The Ports got back-to-back one-out singles in the first inning but had the inning end when Seth Brown lined into a double-play. Joe Bennie doubled with one out in the second, but then Rawhide starter Lucas Irvine (4-0) proceeded to retire the next 16 batters in-a-row to take him two outs deep into the seventh inning. Sandber Pimentel broke up the stretch of 16 straight set down and in doing so, knocked Irvine from the game. Luis Ramirez came in from the bullpen and, before throwing his first pitch, picked Pimentel off of first.

Irvine earned the win after going 6.2 innings and allowing four hits while striking out six.

After Ramirez pitched around a leadoff single in the eighth, Bud Jeter (SV, 3) took over in the ninth and gave up a one-out single to Melvin Mercedes, but recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Brown and James Harris to end the ballgame.

Cody Stull and Koby Gauna combined for three scoreless innings of relief for Stockton.

2015 A's first-round pick Richie Martin hit in the leadoff spot and played shortstop in his California League debut for the Ports and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

After going 1-6 on their seven-game homestand, the Ports embark on a seven-game road trip to Southern California, beginning with a three-game series in Lancaster with the JetHawks on Tuesday night. Zack Erwin (1-4, 4.30 ERA) makes the start in the series opener for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Brock Dykxhorn (3-1, 3.21 ERA). First pitch at The Hangar is set for 6:35 p.m. PDT.
