Five-Run Eighth Dooms 'Hawks in Game, Series

ADELANTO, Calif. - The JetHawks took an early three-run lead by the High Desert Mavericks put up eight unanswered runs, including five in the eighth inning, to win 8-3 and take the series on Monday night at Heritage Field.

For the second straight day, the JetHawks' (19-23) bullpen allowed five runs in the eighth inning. Ryan Thompson (0-1) came into the inning having tossed 1.1 scoreless frames but was unable to get an out.

With runners at first and second, Thompson fielded a sacrifice bunt attempt and tried to pick up a force out at third base. His throw sailed into foul territory allowing Scott Heineman to score the go-ahead run. The next three batters all drove in runs and Ryan Deemes came on from the bullpen to finish the inning.

The JetHawks were able to take an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Antonio Nunez walked with two outs in the second inning and promptly scored on a Bobby Boyd triple. Garrett Stubbs followed with a double to bring home Boyd and make it 2-0.

Brooks Marlow doubled to start the fourth inning, moved to third on a Drew Ferguson single and eventually scored on a Bryan Muniz sacrifice fly. Muniz would later single and double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Travis Demeritte put the Mavs on the board with a solo home run, his league-leading 13th of the season, to right field in the fourth inning.

Starter Trent Thornton tossed a solid five innings but was unable to make it out of the sixth. Heineman started the inning with a triple and scored on a Jose Cardona single. Thornton retired the next two batters but allowed a game-tying double to Jairo Beras and was then removed from the game. He allowed three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings with six strikeouts.

Jason Richman (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the victory.

With the loss, the JetHawks dropped three of four to High Desert (29-16) in the series.

Lancaster returns home for a seven-game homestand beginning with three games against the Stockton Ports. The series begins Tuesday with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch at The Hangar.
