South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Reid Returns to the Rays
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jason Fitzsimmons, head coach of the South Carolina Stingrays announced today the return of veteran forward Matt Reid for the 2006-2007 season.
"With such a young team, the importance of leadership is critical to our success," noted Fitzsimmons. We have been very selective in picking those leaders, and Matt fits the bill. He has been a big part of the organization over the last two years and has had two solid seasons with us. We are excited to have him back again this season leading the team with Cail."
This marks Reid's third year with the Stingrays after joining the team in 2004. The Massena, NY native earned 64 points his first year with the team, placing him second on the team for the season. Last season, Reid began the year with former Stingrays right winger Ed Courtenay in Ireland with the Belfast Giants of the EIHL. After re-joining the Stingrays as a free agent in November 2005, Reid went on to be the second-leading scorer again, playing 51 games and earning 54 points (24g, 30a). Reid played in all six of the Stingrays playoff games last season scoring four goals and adding two assists.
"I'm glad I was able to work out an agreement with the Stingrays for this season," commented Reid. "With Davis, Cail, and myself, I think we have a strong foundation of veterans to build the team around. I'm excited for training camp to begin."
The 5'10", 190-lb. forward began his professional year with the Pee-Dee Pride in 2000. The seven-year professional recorded his best year with the Pride during the 2002-2003 season where he scored 28 goals and added 44 assists for 72 points that year. Reid's career also includes a stop in the American Hockey League with the Portland Pirates during his stand-out 2002-2003 season.

Bednar Promoted
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Darren Abbott, President of the South Carolina Stingrays, announced today that Assistant Coach Jared Bednar will be the Vice President of Hockey Operations in addition to staying on as an Assistant Coach. Bednar's new position is effective immediately.
"Jared's role with the Stingrays has broadened each year since he became an Assistant Coach in 2002," noted Abbott. "This is a natural progression for him personally and a great fit for the organization."
Bednar, 32, is entering his fifth season as Assistant Coach of the Stingrays. The native of Humboldt, Saskatchewan played six seasons for the Rays from 1995-2002 before taking on coaching duties. He is seventh on the all-time Stingrays list for games played with 279 and fifth on the all-time Stingrays list in penalty minutes with 794. Bednar played a total of nine professional seasons in the ECHL, AHL, and IHL.
"I'm very thankful for the opportunity the organization and ownership group has given me," said Bednar. "I am excited to expand my position with the team and to take on the new responsibilities and challenges that come along."
Bednar will be in full control over the hockey operations budget, including but not limited to player salaries, travel, equipment, housing and medical costs. Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons will still control player personnel decisions.
