September 13, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
The South Carolina Stingrays coaching staff has had a busy week, signing Joel Irving and Jayme Platt as well as trading for Ryan Finnerty. Jason Fitzsimmons and Jared Bednar are currently in Washington DC for the beginning of the Capitals training camp, but that has not slowed the process of signing the new team.
Irving, a Montreal Canadiens draft pick in 1994, played three seasons with the Stingrays from 2000-03. The native of Lumsden, Saskatchewan had at least 40 points in each of his three seasons in South Carolina. Irving, 6'4" - 225lbs, is an ECHL Veteran. Last season, Irving scored eight goals and added 18 assists for 26 points in 59 games with the Odessa Jackalopes of the Central League.
"Joel is a strong power forward that will give us good size and speed up front," commented Jason Fitzsimmons. "He is a fan favorite that plays an exciting brand of hockey."
Platt will look to fill the void left by Kirk Daubenspeck, who recently signed with the Hershey Bears of the AHL. The native of Redmond, Washington has played the last two seasons in Europe with Manchester and Sheffield. He helped the Greenville Grrrowl to a Kelly Cup as a rookie with a record of 30-9-1. Platt played college hockey at Lake Superior State University.
"Jayme is an accomplished goaltender that will give us an opportunity to win every night," explained Fitzsimmons.
Fitzsimmons also announced a trade that sent Trevor G Johnson to the Texas Wildcatters in exchange for the rights to Ryan Finnerty.
Finnerty, a center from Lethbridge, Alberta, scored 13 goals and added 13 assists in 52 games last season for the Victoria Salmon Kings. The fifth year professional racked up 165 penalty minutes on the season as well. Finnerty spent his first two seasons as a professional with the Peoria Rivermen from 2001-2003. He spent the 2003-04 season with the San Angelo Saints of the Central league and scored 59 points on 22 goals and 37 assists.
