BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Today the Bakersfield Condors announced the signing of defenseman Scott Balan.

Balan, 23, spent last season with the ECHL's Greenville Grrrowl. Balan finished the 2004-05 season with a plus-minus rating of +10, including a +5 evening against the Texas Wildcatters on January 28th. The Red Deer, Alberta, native played in 60 games, scoring a career-high 6 goals and 12 assists for the Grrrowl as they qualified for the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs. Balan scored his 1st career playoff goal against the Florida Everblades in a 4-3 overtime loss in Game 2 of the American Conference Semifinals.

"Scott's another big, strong right-handed shot on defense. He adds size and speed to our line-up," said Head Coach Marty Raymond. "He brings experience from the AHL, which is always great to have."

Prior to joining Greenville, Balan spent time with the Roanoke Express in 2002-03 and the Florence Pride in 2003-04. During both seasons, the defenseman was called up to the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, where he appeared in 38 games with 1 assist.

Balan spent 4 full seasons in major junior hockey, splitting his time with the Regina Pats and the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League. His junior career featured 7 goals and 40 assists in 227 games.

Scott is the sixth defenseman announced by the team. He joins Scott Borders, David Cacciola, Mike Hofstrand, Andrew Ianiero, Kevin Kotyluk, Reagan Leslie, Michel Massie, Oriel McHugh, Nate Metcalf, Andrew Oke, Anders Olsson, Justin Quenneville, Kevin St. Jacques, Oscar Stenberg, and Sean Venedam on the ice for the 2005-06 season, bringing the total number of players signed to 16.

The Bakersfield Condors season opens in 39 days at home on October 22nd against the Victoria Salmon Kings.
