Stingrays Give Carbery First Victory with Overtime Win Over Royals

North Charleston, SC - Head Coach Spencer Carbery recorded his first win and forward Maxime Lacroix picked up three assists as the South Carolina Stingrays (1-0-0-0) defeated the Reading Royals (0-0-1-0) 4-3 in overtime Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Stingrays forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien opened the scoring at 12:43 of the first period slipping a wraparound shot past Royals goaltender Mark Owuya. Defenseman Paul Baier earned the lone assist.

The Royals fought back early in the second period with goals from forward Olivier Labelle at 5:49 and Dennis McCauley at 8:12. Labelle's first of the season was assisted by forward Yannick Riendeau and defenseman Dave Cowan. Forwards Matt Schepke and Ryan Cruthers helped on McCauley's marker.

The Stingrays responded with two power-play goals to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. Forward Danick Paquette buried a rebound past Owuya off the right post at 11:54 from forwards Lacroix and Matt Pope. Forward Sean Dolan put the Stingrays back on top with 1:00 remaining in the frame with help from Lacroix and defenseman Zach Tarkir.

Riendeau knotted the contest back up at 17:27 of the third period lifting a backhanded shot over the left shoulder of Stingrays netminder Daren Machesney. Defenseman Marvin Degon and Labelle registered assists.

With two seconds remaining in overtime, Tarkir buried the game-winning goal for the Stingrays firing a shot through traffic and beating Owuya over the right shoulder. Lacriox and Pope grabbed the assists. Owuya suffered the loss knocking away 41 of 45 Stingrays shots. Machesney tallies his first win of the season pushing away 29 of 32 Royals chances. The Stingrays ended the contest 2-for-5 on the power play while the Royals went 0-for-3.
