Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that goaltender Mark Owuya ["oh WU yah"] has been assigned by the Maple Leafs from the Marlies to Reading. In a separate transaction, the Providence Bruins of the AHL have recalled goaltender Karel St. Laurent from the Royals.

Owuya (6'2/207) (22), who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, is in his first season of North American pro after signing with the Maple Leafs during this past off-season. Owuya participated in the Maple Leafs' training camp and was assigned to the Marlies, but has not yet appeared in a regular season game this year. Last season, he played with four different teams at various levels of hockey in Sweden, including the Swedish Elitserien (SEL) where he logged 32 games with Djurgarden IF Stockholm and led the league with a .927 save percentage. Owuya has played for the Swedish National team in a number of international competitions, including the 2009 U-20 World Junior Championship in which Sweden captured the Silver Medal.

The team kicks off the 2011-12 ECHL season tonight against the South Carolina Stingrays in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Friday, October 14 (7:05 pm). Tonight's game, as with all Royals' road games this year, will be televised live on BCTV courtesy of Royals TV presented by Boscov's Travel and Royal Caribbean Cruise lines in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Radio broadcast begins at 6:35 pm on ESPN Radio 1240 am. Streaming audio is available free of charge on the Royals website, www.royalshockey.com.
