
Stingrays Fight Past Kalamazoo 3-2 in the Shootout

Kalamazoo, MI - The South Carolina Stingrays (14-2-1-2) pushed their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-0-1) with a 3-2 shootout win over the Kalamazoo Wings (7-6-0-2) at Wings Stadium Saturday night. With the win, the Stingrays hold a 7-0-0-2 road record.
After a scoreless first period, Wings forward Yanni Gourde broke 0-0 the tie late in the second period when his shot from the right-wing circle deflected off a Stingrays skate and between the legs of netminder Jeff Jakaitis (W, 28 saves on 30 shots) at 15:07.
Stingrays forward Jack Downing tied the game on the power play 40 seconds into the third period snapping a shot past the glove of Wings goaltender Joel Martin (SOL, 22 saves on 24 shots) from the top of the left-wing circle. Defensemen Scooter Vaughan and Jeremy Price added assists. Forward Marc Hagel put the Stingrays on top with a man-advantage marker at 11:49 from defenseman Derrick Pallis and forward Wayne Simpson. Moments later, the Wings struck on the power play to make it 2-2 off the stick of defenseman Sam Ftorek. In the shootout, Downing and forward Chad Painchaud lit the lamp in the first two rounds and Jakaitis stopped four of five Wings shooters to seal the victory. The Stingrays finished the game 2-for-6 on the power play while the Wings went 1-for-4.
The Stingrays continue a six-game road trip Friday, December 6 against the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:30 p.m. at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida and return to the Coliseum on Saturday, December 14 to take on the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:05 p.m. on College Night and Teddy Bear Toss benefiting Debi's Kids.
The Stingrays will wear special Clemson University jerseys and auction them LIVE after the contest. Clemson alum and two-time Super Bowl Champion Jim Stuckey will drop the ceremonial first puck along with Charleston native and "Survivor: One World" finalist Chelsea Meissner.
