Stingrays sneak past K-Wings
November 30, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- Pushed to the limit, the South Carolina Stingrays remained unbeaten in regulation on the road escaping Wings Stadium with a 3-2 shootout victory Saturday night over the Kalamazoo Wings.
The K-Wings and Stingrays entered the game by shutout out their opponents the night before, so it was only fitting that both teams kept up their shutout ways skating to a scoreless opening 20 minutes.
Utilizing a screen in front of the goal mouth, Yanni Gourde broke the gridlock 15:07 into the second period by notching his team-tying best seventh goal of the season. Eric Kattelus and Elgin Reid assisted on the tally. The assist by Reid was the 100th of his career.
The Stingrays snapped Joel Martin's scoreless streak at 163:28, which dated back to November 8th, with a Jack Downing (5th) power-play goal 40 seconds into the third period.
Marc Hagel (9th) gave the Stingrays their first lead of the night scoring from the right circle with a power-play strike 11:49 into the period.
Kalamazoo responded with a power-play tally to force overtime. Less than two minutes later, Sam Ftorek, who was celebrating his 39th birthday, beat Jeff Jakaitis with a one-timer. The goal was Ftorek's fourth goal of the season, all of them on the power-play, which leads all ECHL defensemen.
The game would be decided in a shootout. South Carolina out dueled Kalamazoo 2-1 in the extra session to earn the victory.
Kalamazoo will begin a four-game road swing this Thursday, December 5th with a 7 p.m. face-off against the Greenville Road Warriors.
The K-Wings will return home on Friday, December 13th versus the Cincinnati Cyclones on Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest and Teddy Bear Toss Night. The fan that wears the ugliest Holiday sweater will receive $200. The game will also feature $2 beers, $2 hot dogs and $1 Pepsi products.
December 13th will also be the annual Teddy Bear Toss night, when the K-Wings score their first goal; fans will throw stuffed animals onto the ice. The stuffed animals collected will go to the Salvation Army and to the K-Wings annual visit to the Children's Hospital at Bronson.
