South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays scored a goal in the final minute of both the first and second period, but were unable to come back and defeat the Columbia Inferno as they fell by a score of 4-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"The guys worked hard this weekend," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "The guys were a little worn out today, but they played hard all game today, and in the last two games as well."
In the first period, the Columbia Inferno got on the board when Brad Ralph scored his 17th goal of the game at 13:23. After the Inferno pushed their lead to two goals, Travis Morin got his team leading 32nd goal of the season. The goal came on the power play from Cail MacLean and Marty Guerin at 19:34 to cut the lead in half before the first intermission.
In the second period, Columbia scored first again, this time at 4:31, to make the score 3-1. But, much like the first period, the Rays scored a late goal, this one coming on the power play at 19:36 by Paul McIlveen. The goal was assisted by Nate Kiser and Cail MacLean.
Jeremy Schenderling scored just 3:12 into the third period to make it a two goal lead once again. Although South Carolina had a number of chances, and pulled Josh Johnson for the extra attacker, they were unable to score again, and lost by a score of 4-2.
The winning goaltender was Jeff Jakaitis who stopped 37 of the 39 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Johnson who stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-6 on the power play while killing off one of the two short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action on Friday night when they once again welcome in the Florida Everblades to the North Charleston Coliseum. Game time will be at 7:05.
