Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- ECHL All-Stars Yannick Tifu and Matt Beaudoin would lead the Defending American Conference Champion Dayton Bombers to an exciting shootout victory over in-state rival Cincinnati Cyclones in front of a loud 3,902 on Sunday afternoon at the Nutter Center.
Yannick Tifu, sporting a fresh haircut, led the charge against the Cyclones from his very first shift. Tifu, in his first game back in a Bombers uniform in over a month was recently sent down by the AHL's Rochester Americans, and put Dayton into the lead just 3:24 in off a pass from line mate Masahito Nishiwaki. The Bombers continued to control the flow of much of the opening period while Mike Walsh blazed a trail to the Bombers score sheet at the 12:02 mark with Chris Eade and Corey LeClair earning the helpers. Outstanding goaltending by Jeremy Duchesne would keep the pressuring Cyclones off the scoreboard and ensure the Bombers 2-0 lead after twenty minutes. Cincinnati out shot Dayton in the first 17-7.
As feared by many fans, the second period would feature a Tifu-less Bombers team, as the star forward was kept in the dressing room after sustaining an injury near the end of the first. Line mate and fellow all-star Matt Beaudoin picked up the offensive leadership role during the middle period, adding his team leading 36th goal of the season at the 8:50 mark, assisted by Mike Walsh and Ryan Smyth. The goal, Dayton's second of the night on the powerplay, put the Bombers ahead 3-0. The hard work of goaltender Jeremy Duchesne continued to provide the backbone for the Bombers defense by keeping the Cyclones off the board throughout the second period, ensuring a 3-0 lead at the break. Dayton out shot Cincinnati in the second 8-7, for a two-period total of 24-15 Cincinnati.
The Cyclones came out in the third period with an added intensity, looking more like their first-place form. Cincinnati's Matt Syroczynski ended the shutout 6:00 into the third for his 28th goal of the season. Cincinnati's comeback went into full swing at the 8:33 mark as eventual third star Jason Deitsch netted his 9th goal in a Cyclones jersey to cut the Bombers lead to two. Just over a minute later, Cincinnati's Mathieu Aubin was hauled down on a breakaway, and subsequently went on to score a penalty-shot goal of his own to tie the game at 3-3. Both teams battled to the end of regulation with neither able to put the game away. Shots on goal in the third again favored Dayton 12-11 for a sixty-minute total of 35-28 Cyclones.
Both teams would earn a shot on goal during the 5-minute sudden death overtime, but would not find the game winner in the extra frame. Final shots through overtime totaled 36-29 Cincinnati.
With another point in the standings on the line for both teams, Dayton showed the crowd just who wanted it, with Brad Bonello, Masahito Nishiwaki and Matt Beaudoin scoring on Cyclones goaltender Cody Rudkowsky for the win. None of Cincinnati's three shooters were able to beat Duchesne.
With the shootout win, Dayton's record now stands at 27-25-5-5 for 64 points in the ECHL's North Division, one point behind forth place Johnstown.
Dayton takes a trip to Elmira on Thursday night to battle the rival Elmira Jackals before traveling to Trenton, New Jersey in a rematch from Friday and Saturday night and right back to Elmira on Saturday.
