Charlotte Checkers News Release

Pensacola, F.L. - The first of three games in three nights against the Pensacola Ice Pilots started well for the Checkers as they won by a score of 3-1 on Saturday night.

The Checkers registered the first goal of the game on a three-on-one break. Defenseman, Jared Nightingale skated down the right wing boards passing to fellow defenseman, Matt Waddell who directed the puck to a wide open Blake Bellefeuille. Bellefeuille would make no mistake as he flipped the puck past a sprawling Ice Pilots goaltender, Cam Elsworth at 16:28.

After killing off a two-man advantage, the Checkers would go up by two goals while on a power play of their own. It was Tom Pyatt who found a loose puck in front of Elsworth and roofed it over the catching arm and in the net at 11:17 putting Charlotte up, 2-0.

Pensacola would finally get on the board in the third period and they would do it with the man-advantage. Former Checker, Patrick Bordeleau blasted a shot past Charlotte goalie, Chris Holt at 7:22 after the netminder had steered aside a sharp angle attempt by Luke Erickson. This made it a one goal game in favor of the Checkers but, it wouldn't stay that way for long. Chris Capraro's pass to Bellefeuille caromed off an Ice Pilots skate in front and slid behind Elsworth giving Charlotte all cushion they would need to solidify a 3-1 win.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on March 20 against the Augusta Lynx. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $175.
