Stingrays Erase Three Goal Deficit to Defeat Walleye 5-3

Toledo, OH -The South Carolina Stingrays (12-6-1-3) defeated the Toledo Walleye (7-7-1-2) 5-3 Saturday night at Lucas County Arena in the second game of a three-in three weekend. Stingrays rookie forward Rob Ricci pushed his point streak to five games and goaltender Todd Ford made 36 saves.

The Walleye struck first notching a short-handed goal at 12:51 from defenseman Jean-Claude Sawyer. Right-winger Mark Nebus started a 2-on-1 rush towards the Stingrays zone after a shot from Stingrays defenseman Johann Kroll was blocked. Nebus fed Sawyer who was skating down the right-wing boards and beat Ford for the lead. Toledo doubled the score at 18:25 with a power-play tally from forward Derek Nesbitt. Center Chris Robertson assisted Nesbitt's third of the season.

Toledo grabbed a 3-0 lead at 3:41 of the second period with a blast from defenseman Travis Ehrhardt beating Ford high glove-side. Ehrhardt's first professional goal was assisted by Sawyer. The Stingrays answered back six seconds later as rookie Dain Prewitt buried his second of the season past Walleye goaltender Jordan Pearce from Nate Kiser and Jake Hauswirth. South Carolina outshot the Walleye in the second period 17 to 13.

Searching for momentum entering the third period, Stingrays forward Spencer Carbery went toe-to-toe with Nebus at 1:03. South Carolina responded at the 2:07 mark with a goal from Rob Ricci. Zach Tarkir and Matt Fornataro recorded the assists. Several seconds later the Stingrays tied the game at three as Fornataro found the back of the net at 3:00 from Johnson and Trent Campbell. The 3-3 tie lasted until 13:44 of the final period when Stingrays defenseman Josh Godfrey fired home a power-play goal beating Pearce high glove-side to grab the first Stingrays lead of the game. Keith Johnson picked up the assist. Carbery sealed the victory for the South Carolina with an empty-net goal at 18:50 from Ricci to complete the game scoring. Ford earned the win stopping 36 of 39 Walleye shots while Pearce knocked away 35 of 39. The Stingrays power play finished 1-for-6 on the evening. Toledo ended the night 1-for-4.
