Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs offense got back on track thanks to a great special teams effort, and the team powered past the division-leading Reading Royals by a score of 6-3 on Saturday night at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.
With the win, the Chiefs' record improved to 6-8-3.
The high-scoring rookie tandem of Connor Shields and Troy Schwab teamed up to give the Chiefs the early lead. Schwab gathered in a loose puck in the high slot and fired off a wrist shot. Shields, who was camped out in front of the net, tipped the shot in past Matt Dalton for his 10th goal of the season 4:32 into the game. Reading came back to tie it 36 seconds later with Ryan Cruthers netting his fifth of the season against Kris Mayotte. After that point, the Chiefs' power play took control and netted two goals before the first expired. Sean Berkstresser hammered home a one-timer at 9:58 and Mike Bartlett tipped in a centering pass at 18:58. Those two tallies were separated by Ben Gordon's ninth goal at 14:56.
The lone second period goal came off the stick of Bryan Marshall at 5:40 with the Chiefs skating shorthanded. Mayotte slipped Marshall a pass and the center rushed the puck nearly coast-to-coast and scored low to the blocker side. It was the Chiefs' second shorthanded goal of the season and gave Mayotte his first assist. The turning point of the game was the Chiefs killing off a 1:09 5-on-3 Reading power play. Marshall's goal followed on a hooking minor given to Dan Collins at 4:11.
Reading brought the early pressure in the third, registering the first five shots of the period. Mayotte was there to stem the tide early and allowed for Bartlett to give the Chiefs there biggest lead of the game at 5-2. Bartlett's second of the game came at 9:11 with assists going to Marshall and R.J. Anderson. Charlie Kronschable answered with a goal quickly at 10:05 to pull Reading back within two. Dalton got pulled for the extra attacker with just less than two minutes remaining, but Reading could not convert. Marshall earned his third point of the night with an empty net goal at 19:11 and set the final score.
Mayotte picked up his fourth win of the season with 33 saves. The Chiefs' power play went 2-for-6 with the penalty was a perfect 6-for-6.
