South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Estero, FL - The South Carolina Stingrays (35-15-5-6) grabbed a 2-0 lead heading into the third period, but could not hold on as the Florida Everblades (30-19-4-5) came back to win 3-2 in a shootout in front of 4,548 at Germain Arena Sunday afternoon. Stingrays rookie Jake Hauswirth recorded a goal and an assist and the Stingrays fired a season-high 51 shots on goal in the loss.
After a scoreless first period, Stingrays defenseman Nick Klaren lit the lamp at 8:42 of the second frame blasting a shot from the right-wing point over the glove of Everblades goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu for his first goal of the season. Forwards Gregg Johnson and Hauswirth received assists. Minutes later, Stingrays' Hauswirth capitalized on the power play at 10:44 to make it 2-0 from defensemen Grant Farrell and Jason Fredricks. Through two periods of play, the Stingrays outshot the Everblades 32 to 17.
The Everblades cut the lead in half at 5:06 of the third period off a drive from forward Ross Carlson beating Stingrays goaltender Parker Van Buskirk over the left shoulder. Forward Dominic Osman and defenseman Benn Olson earned assists on Carlson's 19 goal of the season. Everblades forward Ernie Hartlieb tied the game on the power play at 8:41 from center Colin Nicholson and Osman. Both sides fired two shots in overtime, but never found the twine. In the shootout, Florida's Nicholson and Osman beat Van Buskirk and Beckford-Tseu blanked all four Stingrays shooters for the win. Van Buskirk finished the night stopping 23 of 25 Everblades shots. Beckford-Tseu earned his second straight win over the Stingrays kicking aside 49 of 51 opportunities. The Stingrays ended the contest 1-for-5 on the power play while the Everblades went 1-for-3.
The Stingrays return to North Charleston Coliseum Friday, March 5 at 7:05 p.m. against the Cincinnati Cyclones for $2 Beer Night, March of Dimes Night, MUSC Night and BB&T's Blow the Dough.
