Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Jeff Mathis and Luke Allen each connected for three-run homers Thursday night lifting Salt Lake to a 6-5 win over Tucson at Franklin Covey Field. Tucson out-hit the Stingers 11-8 marking five straight losses in which the Sidewinders have collected as many or more hits than the opponents. Tucson out-hit the Stingers 45-29 in losing three of four games.
For the fourth straight game in the series, Tucson built an early 2-0 lead. The Sidewinders got on the board in the first against Stingers starter Scott Schneider with doubles from Andy Green and Scott Hairston. Matt Kata plated Green with a ground out. Hairston scored on a single from Carlos Quentin.
Green increased the Sidewinder lead to 3-0 in the top of the third when he slammed a solo home run, his 12th of the year. Green has also reached base in 25 straight games with a hit or a walk.
Jon Cannon allowed just one hit through his first three innings of work but ran into trouble in the fourth. Zach Sorensen dropped down a bunt single and went to third on a double from Casey Kotchman. Jeff Mathis blasted a three-run homer to left field to tie the game at 3.
Tucson regained the lead briefly in the top of the sixth when Brian Barden singled in Koy Hill. However Carlos Quentin was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the inning.
The Sidewinders lead didn't last long. Luke Allen blasted another three-run homer off Cannon in the bottom of the sixth putting the Stingers ahead for good 6-4.
The Sidewinders threatened in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs. Scott Dunn was summoned from the bullpen and struck out Koy Hill to end the inning. Dunn then struck out the side in the eighth.
Dunn allowed a run on two hits in the ninth but retired Kata on a smash to Casey Kotchman to end the game.
Tucson dropped to 42-46. The Sidewinders return home Friday night for a brief three-game series and home stand with the Tacoma Rainiers before the All Star break. Mark Freed (4-4 5.85) will start for the Sidewinders against Tacoma's Cha Seung Baek (7-2 4.52). The game will air live at 7:00 p.m. on Cool 1450 AM.
