Sarnia Sting News Release
The Sting snapped a 4-game losing skid tonight with a 5-2 win over the Eastern Conference's Sudbury Wolves. The Sting improved to 7-10-1-1 on the season with tonight's win, in front of 2835 fans at the RBC Centre.
The Sting dawned a specialty Star Wars jersey tonight, with all auction proceeds going towards the Inn of the Good Shepherd. Fans can bid on the jerseys here - http://stingauction.sarnia.com/
It wasn't until 18:38 into the opening frame that the game saw its first goal. The game's first star, Kevin Spinozzi picked up his first of the game with a howitzer from the point. Lajeunesse and Korostelev picked up the helpers on the first goal.
Danny Desrochers evened the score for the Wolves in the second period, knocking home a rebound after a broken play. Kashtanov and Capobianco were credited with assists for Sudbury. The Desrochers marker would prove to be the only goal scored in the 2nd period.
Just 1:44 into the 3rd and final period, Sting rookie, Troy Lajeunesse picked up his 5th of the season, and 2nd in as many games this weekend. Lajeunesse tucked the puck past Timpano after a great feed from Vladislav Kodola. Spinozzi picked up and assist on the goal as well.
With less than 10 minutes to go in the game, Nikandrov picked up his 4th of the season to widen the gap. DeAngelo and Kodola were credited with assists on the goal. Just two minutes later, Patrick White notched his 3rd of the season with a short-handed tally. The assists were given to Brandon Lindberg, who played a solid game for the Sting tonight, and Josh Chapman.
Spinozzi picked up his 2nd goal and 3rd point of the game on the powerplay late in the 3rd. DeAngelo took a pass from Korostelev and was able to find Spinozzi at the back-door for the one-timer.
Pezzetta was able to get on the board for Sudbury late in the 3rd, but the margin was too big for it to matter.
Head Coach, Trevor Letowski was happy about his team's ability to close this one out, "We had to have that shift-to-shift intensity, and we executed it; it was nice to see. It was a game we desperately needed and the boys dug deep and got it."
Letowski added, "A big story of the game was that there was a lot of guys that stepped up. Lajeunesse, Kodola, White, Lindberg; those might have been our four best forwards tonight, and we need that."
The Sting return home next Friday night to take on the Erie Otters. Then on Sunday afternoon, the Sting will be unveiling their World Junior Champions banner and giving away a collectable player card. Make sure to bring your skates and join the team for the 1st post-game Skate with the Sting of the season.
