Soo Greyhounds News Release
PLYMOUTH, MI - It was the beginning of a string of what will be nine of eleven games on the road for the Soo Greyhounds.
And after a tied first period the Soo Greyhounds used a six-goal second period en-route to an 8-1 victory over the Plymouth Whalers on Saturday Night, good for their third road win of the year.
"I think it's probably fair to say that. I have been with the team for five of the seven road games. There is a lot of good things and there is a lot of things we can still do better" said Head Coach Sheldon Keefe when asked if it was his club's best road performance of the season.
After holding the Whalers shotless for the first four-and-a-half minutes of the first period, it would be Plymouth taking to a 5-on-3 advantage for just under a minute. The Hounds penalty kill would stand tall to the task keeping things scoreless.
Plymouth would later open the scoring on their third man advtange of the first period. A one-time from the left circle by Mathew Campagna would get past BRANDON HALVERSON for a 1-0 lead.
The Hounds would quickly respond, just over two minutes later, when DARNELL NURSE led a 2-on-1 up the right wing. The Greyhound captain fed the puck across to BRYAN MOORE who quickly snapped a shot past Alex Nedeljkovic for his 7th goal of the year and a tied game.
The Hounds outshot Plymouth 16-12 in the first period while sitting even at one.
In the opening minute of the second period BRANDON HALVERSON would make a sliding save to his right holding the score before the Hounds would break things wide open in the frame. It was one of Halverson's 37 saves on the night.
The first three shots of the period would find the back of the net for the Hounds to get the ball rolling.
DAVID MILLER started things off backhanding a puck past Nedeljkovic at 1:25 for his 6th goal of the year and would be his first of three in the period. DARNELL NURSE'S one-time at 2:31 and then TIM GETTINGER, who was all alone in front at 4:42, capped off the string of three goals in a span of three minutes and seventeen seconds.
The latter two goals came on the power play.
MILLER then scored his second of the period on a rebound, while parked at the side of an open net, to increase the lead to 5-1 Greyhounds.
Head Coach Sheldon Keefe would use his team's time out with 3:52 to go in the period before seeing them net two more goals.
Off an odd-man rush with KEIGAN GOETZ, MILLER would kick the puck up to his stick before burying his 1st career hat trick at the 17:42 mark.
"You talk about being dynamic, being dynamic around the net, I think thats what sums up Millzy's (David Miller) game. He seems to be hitting his stride here" began Keefe.
"He's the kind of player that (just like last year) took a little bit of time to really get his confidence and getting his goal scoring stride. He was a lot of fun to watch tonight" Keefe continued.
And before the period was over SERGEY TOLCHINSKY would notch his 9th goal of the year going blocker side on Nedeljkovic, after being awarded a penalty shot, to have the Hounds with a 7-1 lead after two periods.
The trio of DAVID MILLER (3g), KEIGAN GOETZ (3a) and BRYAN MOORE (1g, 1a) would end the evening with 8 points between the trio. "I liked that they scored. I thought they carried the play very well, moved the puck very efficiently up the ice. Keigan Goetz made some really good plays in tight, to keep plays alive and keep the puck moving. They just moved the really efficiently and capitalized on their chances" said Keefe of his forward trio when asked what he liked about their play.
Plymouth would replace Nedeljkovic (26 saves on 33 shots) with Zack Bowman to start the third period.
The lone goal of the period came with under two minutes to play when CHARLEY GRAASKAMP convered on a rebound to the right of the Whaler goal for his 2nd goal of the year, with assists going to MEDRIC MERCIER and COLTON WHITE.
With the victory the Hounds record improved to 14-5-0-0 on the season, while they now take a four game winning streak into Sunday afternoon.
