Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Aaron Shortridge delivered another stellar pitching performance for Altoona in a nine-inning complete game as the Curve came from behind to defeat Erie, 3-2, on Friday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
The outing from Shortridge was the first nine-inning complete game for the Curve since Domingo Robles on August 26th, 2019, against the Akron RubberDucks. It marked a new career-long outing for Shortridge and was his seventh win of the 2023 campaign.
Shortridge allowed just one earned run on a Justice Bigbie solo home run in the top of the first inning. The second run crossed home for Erie in the ninth inning after Bigbie reached on a throwing error by Claudio Finol and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Dingler. Shortridge struck out seven batters and allowed six hits in the win.
Altoona first got on the board when Matt Gorski led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk and two stolen bases. Carter Bins followed with a hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for a Jacob Gonzalez sacrifice fly to score Gorski. Later in the same inning, Will Matthiessen and Chavez Young both reached base via a base hit and hit-by-pitch to load the bases for Finol, who knocked an RBI-single to make it a 2-1 game.
Later in the eighth inning, Gorski drew another walk and took second on a Bins flyout to right. Gonzalez followed with an RBI-single to give Altoona the much-needed insurance run.
Tsung-Che Cheng saw his 17-game hitting streak end in a 0-for-4 performance. It was the second win of the series for Altoona, who improved to 16-19, 50-53.
Altoona continues their 12 game homestand with the Erie SeaWolves, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, with a Saturday night 6:00 p.m. start. Altoona will send LHP Jackson Wolf to face SeaWolves LHP Pitcher Brant Hurter.
