
Stein, Rodriguez Transferred to Edmonton

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that right-handed pitcher Blake Stein has been transferred to the club from Double-A Harrisburg and that left-handed pitcher Jose Rodriguez has been transferred from Single-A Brevard County. Both pitchers have previous experience with the Trappers. Stein was 3-1, 3.47 (23.1 IP - 9 ER) in five appearances (four starts) with the Trappers in 1998, while Rodriguez went 0-0, 0.00 (5.2 IP - 0 ER) with one save in four appearances last season. He is the first member of last season's PCL Championship squad to reappear in a Trapper uniform. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 23 players; 11 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and four outfielders, plus three players (right-handed pitcher Jose Colon, left-handed pitcher Scott Downs and right-handed pitcher Bo Donaldson) on the disabled list.
Stein, 29, was 1-3, 6.63 (19.0 IP - 14 ER) in four appearances (three starts) with Harrisburg. He was 0-0, 6.75 (8.0 IP - 6 ER) in three appearances with the Trappers earlier this season. Stein was signed by the Expos on June 2 and assigned to Edmonton. Montreal transferred him to Short-Season Single-A Vermont on June 13 and then to Harrisburg on June 16. He signed as a free agent by Tampa Bay on December 19, 2002, but never pitched for the Devil Rays. He was reassigned to minor league camp on March 10 and was later signed to a minor league deal by the Cleveland Indians. The McComb, Mississippi native was assigned to Double-A Akron on May 14 and appeared in two games for the Aeros, going 0-1, 27.00 (2.2 IP - 8 ER) in two outings. Stein was released by the Indians on May 21. He was originally selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth round of the 1994 draft and was traded to the Oakland A's with pitchers T.J. Mathews and Eric Ludwick in exchange for first baseman Mark McGwire on July 31, 1997. Stein was then traded by the A's with pitchers Brad Rigby and Jeff D'Amico to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Kevin Appier on July 31, 1999. Stein was 0-4, 7.91 (46.2 IP - 41 ER) with one save in 27 appearances (two starts) with the Royals in 2002. He also appeared in six games (three starts) for Double-A Wichita, going 0-1, 3.48 (10.1 IP - 4 ER). Stein is 21-28 with a 5.41 ERA (475.2 IP - 286 ER) with two saves in 117 Major League appearances (66 starts). He began the 2003 season with a career minor league record of 51-25 and a 3.53 ERA (709.1 IP - 278 ER) in 133 appearances (128 starts). Stein has one save in his minor league career.
Rodriguez, 28, was 0-0, 0.00 (1.0 IP - 0 ER) with one save in one appearance with Brevard County. He began the season with Triple-A Rochester and went 0-0, 5.87 (7.2 IP - 5 ER) in six appearances with the Red Wings before being released on April 23. The Montreal Expos signed Rodriguez as a free agent on June 17 and assigned him to Brevard County. He was placed on the disabled list, June 18, while recovering from surgery on his left elbow and was activated on June 29. Rodriguez was placed on the temporary inactive list on July 3, while attending a funeral. The Santurce, Puerto Rico native split the 2002 season between four clubs. He was 2-1, 2.66 (23.2 IP - 7 ER) with three saves in 26 appearances with Triple-A Memphis; 0-0, 54.00 (0.1 IP - 2 ER) in two appearances with the St. Louis Cardinals; 0-1, 14.73 (3.2 IP - 6 ER) in four appearances with the Minnesota Twins and appeared in four games with the Trappers. Rodriguez was originally selected out of Florida International University by the Cardinals in the 24th round of the 1997 draft.
