Berger, Condrey Take PCL Honors

Published on July 7, 2003 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– Omaha Royals designated hitter Brandon Berger filled the sky with baseballs to earn the Pacific Coast League's Batter of the Week honor for games beginning on June 30 and continuing through July 6, driving in 21 runs in just seven contests. Portland Beavers starter Clay Condrey receives the Pitcher of the Week nod for the same period by not allowing a run over two starts.

Berger, who hails from Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, had five games during the week in which he drove in at least three runs, beginning the week on June 30 by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, a home run, and four RBI in a 17-9 Royals win at Albuquerque. Two days later, Berger came a single away from hitting for the cycle, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and four more RBI. On July 3, the Kansas City Royals farmhand added a 2-for-4 performance with a homer, a stolen base, and three runs batted, before returning home for a Fourth of July fireworks display that included another 2-for-4 day, with two doubles and three more batted in. Berger finished the week with a flourish on July 6, going 2-for-5 with a home run and six RBI, helping Omaha to its eighth straight win.

Meanwhile, Condrey, who is pitching in Portland while on a rehabilitation assignment from the San Diego Padres, wasted little time in proving to the parent club that he was feeling better, allowing just two hits while striking out four batters through five innings in his first start on June 30. During his second start on July 5, the Beaumont, Texas native shut out Edmonton on five hits through seven innings while striking out six en route to a 5-1 Beavers victory.
