PCL Celebrates Independence Day

Published on July 7, 2003 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo– Pacific Coast League teams celebrated Independence Day with dazzling results; on the field, in the sky and in the stands, as 204,551 baseball fans enjoyed PCL games on July 3rd and 4th across its 16 stadiums, surpassing last year's two-day total by more than 15,000.

Thirteen teams hosted crowds of 11,000 or more, including a league-high 22,257 in Omaha. The turnstiles at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake and AutoZone Park in Memphis were hot enough to ignite Fourth of July fireworks, as each park drew 15,911 and 15,506, respectively, while 14,611 fans jammed Sacramento's Raley Field.

Although more than 120,000 flocked to PCL parks on July 4th, the holiday weekend's fuse was lit a day earlier at eight of the League's stadiums, the brightest spark provided by the 13,100 record-setters for the Albuquerque Isotopes on July 3rd at their new ballpark. The Tucson faithful also primed their holiday by packing Tucson Electric Park to the tune of 12,555, and Colorado Springs detonated its old franchise record, rocketing to 9,501 for a fireworks extravaganza at Sky Sox Stadium.

The eye-popping July 3rd and 4th throws open the gates on the Pacific Coast League' s pursuit for a new attendance milestone, a record the circuit is well on pace to shatter for a fourth straight year.
