Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (19-16-9) topped the Utah Grizzlies (23-16-4) by an 8-1 score at Qwest Arena. The eight goals scored is a Steelheads season-high, and Marty Flichel's six points in the game is an individual season-high.
Matt Tassone ignited the offense with a first period rebound goal- his seventh- at 10:53 of the opening period to give Idaho a 1-0 lead. Flichel and Tristan King assisted on the goal. Just over five minutes later, Flichel scored his first of the evening and 10th of the season to give Idaho a 2-0 lead, which is how the first period ended.
The second saw the Steelheads build on their offensive attack, as Evan Barlow scored just after the three minute mark of the period; his sixth of the season gave Idaho a 3-0 lead. At 6:31 of the second, Geoff Irwin received a perfectly placed saucer pass in front of the Utah net and one-timed the puck into the goal to give Idaho a 4-0 lead with his fourth of the season.
Less than five minutes later, Tom May netted Utah's only goal; the tally cut Idaho's lead to 4-1.
Irwin answered for the Steelheads with his second of the contest and fifth of the season at 13:37 of the second period, giving Idaho a 5-1 lead.
Flichel scored his second of the game with less than four minutes remaining in the second period to give Idaho a five-goal lead.
Mark Derlago made the score 7-1 in the Steelheads' favor when he scored the team's first shorthanded goal of the season at 7:39 of the third. Derlago picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, pulled away from the defense, and scored the unassisted goal; his 22nd of the season.
Marty Flichel secured the win and sealed his hat trick- and six point night- with a slap shot from the top of the left circle on the power play at 14:11 of the third period. His third of the night was his 12th of the season.
Tyler Beskorowany stopped 34 of 35 shots for Idaho. He is now 6-3-4. Marc Rinfret is 0-2-0 after stopping 20 of 28 shots.
