
Steelheads Take a Bite out of Niagara

MISSISSAUGA, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads welcomed their division rivals, the Niagara IceDogs to the Hershey Centre on Friday night. The meeting was the first of eight in the season series. The Steelheads came out early and often in this one, generating a number of good scoring chances early on. The teams exchanged chances throughout the period, with a number of special teams opportunities. With lots of energy at both sides of the ice, the game would remain scoreless until the final seconds of the period when Anthony DiFruscia would convert on a shorthanded opportunity putting the IceDogs ahead with just 3 seconds left on the clock. The shots on goal after a very evenly matched first period were 16-13 in favour of Niagara.
The Trout responded early in the second period, as Jason Smith picked up his first career OHL marker to tie the game at one; Austin Gerhart picked up the assist as his shot trickled through Brent Moran for Smith to tap home. The game opened up in the middle frame for both teams as they went back and forth exchanging chances. Both Martin and Moran came up big for their respective teams, leaving the game knotted at 1 through two periods. Shots on goal after 2 still favoured Niagara, 39-27.
Both teams came out aggressive in the third period, looking to get the go-ahead goal. After Billy Jenkins was sent off for goalie interference early in the first, Steelheads defenceman, Stefan Leblanc would notch his first goal of the season to put the Steelheads on top 2-1 with a laser from the point, beating Moran high glove side. Assists on Leblanc's goal went to Sean Day and Nathan Bastian. The Steelheads would add to their lead later in the third, on a short handed goal this time as Bastian knocked home a Damian Bourne rebound to give the Steelheads 3-1 lead. Showing their resilience, Niagara would bounce back just 28 seconds later as Vince Dunn beat Spencer Martin on a scramble in front to pull the Dogs within one at 3-2. Looking to ice the game, Lucas Venuto would regain the Steelheads two goal lead as he scored his first of the season, with assists going to Day and Bryson Cianfrone. With the goalie pulled, Niagara would get back within one with just seconds left on the clock however it was too little too late as Spencer Martin's 51-save performance resulted in a second straight Steelheads victory.
Martin, Day and Smith were named the 3 Stars of the Game, while Bastian was named the Ryobi Hardest Working Player of the Game. The Steelheads will look to extend their undefeated season this Sunday afternoon against Jakob Chychrun and the Sarnia Sting. Great seats are still available!
