Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Wolves were at home Friday night as they hosted their Northern rivals, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Friday's game marked the 300th game in the Northern rivalry between these two clubs. This game also marked the first of 6 games in the Bell FibreOP Challenge Cup with the Greyhounds this season. The Wolves were looking to extend their home winning streak but fell short after facing a hot goaltender in New York Rangers prospect BRANDON HALVERSON.
Despite a half an hour delay to the start of the game, both teams came out flying during the first period. MATT SCHMALZ had a great opportunity that created a scramble in front of the net, however BRANDON HALVERSON was there to make the save.
The game picked up in the second period and saw both teams creating pressure on both ends of the ice. BRODY SLIK brought a physical game to the period, which resulted in several opportunities for the Wolves, however they were unable to capitalize on the chances. The game remained scoreless after the first two periods of action. TROY TIMPANO and HALVERSON both stopped several scoring opportunities during the first two periods.
In the early minutes of the third period, Greyhounds' KEIGAN GOETZ put the SOO on the scoreboard and gave them a 1-0 lead. With a minute and a half remaining in the final frame, DAVID MILLER scored to put the Greyhounds up by two. The Wolves were unable to answer. The Greyhound took this one with a final score of 2-0. Final shots on goal were 34-28 in favour of the Greyhounds.
Greyhound's goalie HALVERSON was flawless throughout the game earning himself the 1st star of the game. TIMPANO made 32 saves in net for the Wolves and was awarded the 2nd star of the game. Greyhounds defenseman TYLER GANLY was named 3rd star for his efforts in the contest.
The Wolves are back in action for a Sunday matinee when the North Bay Battalion come to town. Sunday is Family Day when all children accompanied by an adult receive admission for $5. Game time is 2:00pm. There are great seats still available by visiting www.greatersudbury.ca or visit the Sudbury Arena Box Office beginning Sunday at 11am.
