Steelheads Shutdown the Rush - Landon Bow Earns 27-Save
March 2, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Rapid City, SD- Rookie goaltender Landon Bow made 27 saves on Wednesday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center to earn his second professional shutout and guide the Idaho Steelheads (31-18-7) to a 1-0 victory over the Rapid City Rush (21-27-8). It's Bow's second shutout in his last three starts, both by 1-0 scores, as the Steelheads improved to 5-1-0 in the first six games of their eight-game road swing.
Kyle Jean, on his 27th birthday, scored the game's lone goal at 7:44 of the first period off a 2-on-2 rush. After taking an outlet pass from Andre Morrissette in the Idaho zone, Jean and Joe Basaraba motored ahead into the Rapid City zone. Basaraba drove to the net, taking both defenders with him and allowing Jean to drift from the right circle to the high slot before rifling a shot past the glove of Adam Morrison for his ninth tally of the season.
The Rush had several opportunities in the third period but were unable to capitalize. A dump-in early in the period rimmed around the glass in the Idaho zone before hitting a stanchion behind the Steelheads' net. The puck popped directly over the top of the net and landed in the crease at Bow's feet, and the Steelheads were able to clear the puck from a crowd of Rush players.
Late in the period, a bouncing puck into the Idaho zone took a sharp backwards hop in front of the Steelheads net, forcing Charlie Dodero to overskate the puck and giving Rapid City's Terrence Wallin a prime chance between the circles. Wallin fired the puck wide.
The Steelheads fought off one last barrage at the end of regulation with the Rush net empty, with Bow making a final stop on Michael Young from the left point to secure the win. The Steelheads were strong defensively, only allowing seven shots to Rapid City in the third period while protecting a one-goal lead.
The Steelheads were a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, including a 5-on-3 kill of 42 seconds midway through the second period. Corbin Baldwin and Charlie Dodero both came up with important shot-blocks, with Dodero's a block of a point-blank one-timer by Logan Nelson.
Landon Bow improved to 14-4-2 on the season, as the Steelheads earned their seventh victory in the past nine games.
The Steelheads and Rush continue their series on Friday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, with puck-drop scheduled for 7:05pm MT and the game available on 93.1FM KTIK and on ECHLTV.

PLAY OF THE GAME:
Kyle Jean's goal in the first period was all the Steelheads would need on Wednesday night. Jean made a heads-up play entering the offensive zone to recognize where the open ice was going to be. With Joe Basaraba driving to the net on the 2-on-2 rush and taking both defenders with him, Jean could have thrown the puck on goal for a rebound. Instead, he knew he would have the high slot open and he attacked that ice to change the shooting angle. With Morrison moving against the grain, Jean's shot zipped under the glove to put Idaho in front.
