LOVELAND, CO. - Eagles forwards Luke Salazar and Matt Garbowsky each collected two goals and an assist, as Colorado rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the South Carolina Stingrays 7-2 on Wednesday. The win was the 16th consecutive victory for the Eagles, which now establishes a new team record. Nine Eagles skaters posted a point in the contest, while six different Eagles boasted multi-point nights.
Colorado's only power play of the contest would lead to South Carolina burying the game's first goal, as Stingrays forward Steven McParland would race down the right wing and snap a wrist shot past Eagles goalie Clarke Saunders to give South Carolina the shorthanded tally and a 1-0 lead at the 9:47 mark of the first period.
The Stingrays would stretch their lead when forward John Parker fielded a pass between the circles and fired a shot that would light the lamp and give South Carolina the 2-0 advantage with 1:19 left in the opening period of play.
Just 13 seconds later, Colorado would slice the deficit in half when forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel collected his 70th point of the season, deflecting a shot in front of the net that would beat South Carolina goaltender Parker Milner and cut the Stingrays lead to 2-1.
Colorado would launch an offensive barrage in the second period starting with a backhander from the top of the crease from Garbowski that would knot the game at 2-2 at the 6:29 mark of the middle frame. The goal also extended Garbowsky's point streak to 16 straight games with at least one point. Less than six minutes later, Salazar would wire a shot from the right circle that would find the back of the net and give the Eagles the 3-2 lead.
Garbowsky would again get the best of Milner on a 2-on-1 rush when forward Ryan Harrison fed the puck through the slot and allowed Garbowsky to tap in his 32nd goal of the season and extend the Eagles lead to 4-2 with 5:26 remaining in the second period. Just 1:26 later, Colorado would claim a 5-2 advantage when Salazar belted home a shot from the bottom of the left circle for his 22nd tally of the season.
The third period saw Colorado continue to apply pressure in the offensive zone, as defenseman Michael Sdao connected on a centering pass in the low slot that hit the back of the net and grew the Eagles lead to 6-2 at the 7:41 mark of the final frame. Colorado would stretch the lead to five goals when forward Alex Belzile ripped a shot from the bottom of the circle past Milner and made it a 7-2 Eagles advantage. The goal also signaled the end of the night for Milner, who would give way to Steven Summerhays for the duration of the contest.
Clarke Saunders claimed his 25th win of the season, stopping 17 of South Carolina's 19 shots on the night.
The Eagles continue their eight-game home stand when they take on the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday, March 3rd at 7:05pm MT at the Budweiser Events Center.
